As it is January I have not had a chance to fish with this reel yet. It looks and feels extremely well made, and is lighter than it really needs to be. It is a steal at this price, so stock up!

This reel is overkill for all but the biggest trout. It is a bit wide for an LA trout reel and the drag clicks are not distinct enough. The spool release takes some getting used to, but once mastered, is simple and serviceable. That said, this is a heck of a fine piece of machining. I've fought and caught fish up to 22" without problem. The price is right. If you can find a spare spool on the "bay" or used for a discount, you will have an A1 set up for a modest price.
I bought mine from SRT and I have fished mine about thirty days without any issues.

I picked up an older used Litespeed a few years back for my 2/3 wt setup and fell in love. With the deal on Sierra Trading Post I jumped at the chance to upgrade my 5/6 wt setup as well. Spooled it up and took it to a local pond as soon as it showed up. No monsters but I caught some bass and panfish and was able to play with the reel some. It performed flawlessly. A great combination of lightweight, rugged, and smooth...what more can you ask for? Oh and having dealt with the Lamson folks in Idaho regarding some questions in the past, I have no doubt they will stand behind this reel.

Normally I like Lamson reels but this one was defective and I had to return to STP. It appeared that it had already been returned to STP by a prior buyer as the box had been opened and the reel unwrapped. Waste of time and money.

I've been fishing a higher-end rods for years but too cheap to drop an extra $350-$400 on a higher end reel " just to hold the fly line". A friend of mine was singing the praises of his Hatch Finatic reel so I was searching the Internet for information to justify dropping $400 on a reel when I stumbled across Sierra Trading Post's deal on this Lamson. Knowing Lamson also had a great reputation, I started checking the reviews on this model. In the 2016 Yellowstone flyreel shoot out, this reel actually beat the Hatch FInatic by one point overall. At 45% off list price I had to jump on it!
I received the reel from Sierra quicker than I anticipated, got it loaded, and was actually able to use it twice in the past few days. I only had minimal opportunities to test the drag (quite smooth) but I was totally impressed with the smoothness and power on the retrieve, even on an 18 inch rainbow. Much smoother than any of my $200 list reels.
Bottom line, treat yourself! At this price you definitely won't be disappointed…

About Lamson

When Lamson designers and engineers set about to revolutionize fly fishing reels, they threw out the existing assumptions and started from scratch. Beginning with a blank piece of paper, they re-designed, re-thought, and re-tooled fly fishing reels to achieve a crucial balance and optimal performance. Lighter materials like titanium and polymers took the place of steel, wood and cork. Simplified designs meant fewer components, lighter weight and amazing longevity. Along the way, Lamson shaved so much weight from the reel that larger, better-retrieving arbors were incorporated into the design. They topped off their list of impressive advancements with a high performance, conical polymer alloy drag system. The result? Precisely machined fly fishing reels constructed from space age materials that are so light, they seem to defy gravity.
