This is an excellent device! Tucks easily into a pocket, but could save your life in a pinch. So easy to use! I've always wanted one of these, much more reliable than matches or lighters, and ready to go in any season or weather condition. We've used it for starting fires on our portable burner, our Coleman camp stove, and in the campsite fire pit. When using fuels, just make sure to direct the fuel away from you, strike the fire-steel and within a few strokes you should have the right spark. When lighting a wood fire from scratch, we found it ultra convenient to start with a pinch of drier lint (excellent replacement for dry grasses/needles, which aren't always available, depending on where and when you're camping) under some bark fragments or wood splinters. The drier lint catches fire from just a tiny spark and burns really well to get the rest of the material going. We just bought several new bath towels from STP and collected all the first run drier lint -- entirely cotton -- which we've stored in a sandwich bag in our backpacking emergency kit along with one of the fire steels.
