don't see an update function so here is more: Salewa snow trainer has a similar technology sole, ice grip by Vibram. these appear to have been discontinued so good discounts can be had on these as well. The Couloir continues on for 2014 with some changes, The Frasson multifunction is used in a couple of other models, but I see nothing else currently sporting the Vibram. ??? I am wondering at this point about traction on wet rocks and logs, etc. An area where rubber soles are decidedly lacking, some more than others depending on the compound and pattern. I see some mention of other "impregnated rubber" technologies. Seems like there should be a market for more hiking oriented shoes with better function in this area. do industry reps ever read this stuff?

might have to wait until next year to test the grip of the multifunction on ice but it is an interesting idea. I am surprised that few boots seem to have adopted it. another brand, sorry I forgot, uses glass shards imbedded in the rubber. really. anyway these are comfortable boots and have a fairly stiff sole but still some flex in the forefoot. the insulation isn't nearly as thick as in my Sorel paks but I think I will be much more inclined to use them for winter hiking.
