Most Helpful 4-Star Review
Reviewed by Riverdog29 from Jersey shore on Friday, May 24, 2013For some background, I already have a Thule Hullaport Pro folding kayak rack that is very, very similar to the Malone unit. The biggest difference--and what caused the problem for me that caused me to return the Malone rack--is that the base of the Malone rack didn't sit correctly on my roof rack bars because it was too narrow. The base of the Malone rack has a square "channel" (that's the best word I can think of to describe it) that didn't fit/sit on my roof rack bars properly. (The Thule unit has a wider clamp arrangement that fits on a wider range of roof rack bar types/sizes.)
Other than the problem of not fitting for me, the Malone rack seemed to be built very well--definitely as well as the competition here--the padding is adequate to protect and hold the boat, and overall the unit is very sturdy. The Malone tie-down straps seem a little thinner than the Thule straps, and the front-to-back tie-downs only come with one S-hook and no ratchet tension adjusters like the Thule unit.
In conclusion, it may seem that I'm knocking the Malone racks in comparison to the Thule rack, but I'm not. Overall, the Malone racks should work just as well as the Thule rack, just not quite as conveniently (the different tie-downs make a difference), but for price and value, the Malone racks win hands down!
