I bought this Marmot Hydrogen bag based on the recommendation of a friend who uses one. I have used a Marmot Couloir for about 7 years and really liked it as a zero bag but needed a summer bag. The Hydrogen will be a good fit for alpine summer backpacking. I used it for the first time this past weekend, albeit in the back of my pickup. I stayed warm all night wearing just a long sleeve IceBreaker shirt and boxer briefs on the bottom. The air temperature was just under 40 degrees. I think this bag is going to do the trick for summer hiking - and the good part is that it is very light weight.

My only complaint about today's down sleeping bags is that there is minimal down on the bag bottom (supposed to get your back warmth from the pad). But as I roll to my side the less insulated bag bottom rolls with me and my back gets cold. There are sleeping bag brands that have sleeves to contain the pad and prevent the bag roll as the sleeper turns over. I thought about getting one of those but the Sierra Trading Post price on the Hydrogen was too good to pass up.

I am considering adding some wide rip-stop straps to the back of my Couloir and Hydrogen to contain the pad similar to what BA does with their bag system.

We still need to take it out and that will happen later this month.

About Marmot

Conceived in a university dorm room by a pair of climbing buddies, Marmot Mountain Works first opened its doors in the spring of 1974 in Grand Junction, Colorado. At the time, the base of operations was a 100-year-old stone building. That same year, the first Marmot down jacket was produced specifically for an action flick called “The Eiger Sanction,” starring legendary actor Clint Eastwood. In the four decades since, Marmot has continued to engineer reliable gear that exceeds the expectations of outdoor athletes. Today, Marmot tents, backpacks, outerwear, clothing and Marmot sleeping bags are still pushing the limits in the planet’s most challenging conditions, from the summits of the world’s highest mountains to the deepest river basins.
