5.0 out of 5 stars. Reliable 2P tent, quality construction

The tent stayed in the same location for 17 days and housed only one occupant. Night time temperatures ranged from 20 to 60 F. Weather included direct sun, thunderstorms, windstorms and subfreezing frosts. The fly was securely staked down using all available tie-loops, (and two large rocks). The tent and fly remained completely intact under all these conditions and it never leaked anywhere (rainfly and floor). The rainfly vestibule kept my gear stored outside the tent (but under the rainfly) completely dry.

A very interesting result was that condensation only formed on the inside of the rainfly but never on the tent! I believe this may be due to the tent being entirely mesh (except the floor). This important feature avoids the problem of touching the inside of the tent and getting wet from the condensation.

The zippers never snagged. The tent had handy loops to secure the rolled up rainfly flaps when they were open. This allowed partial privacy (due to the remaining rainfly) while allowing ventilation and partial viewing of the outside.

This 2 person tent was fine for one person plus gear planted in one place for over two weeks. Two people is doable if they put their gear outside yet under the rainfly vestibule (but I never tried this).

I've owned a Marmot tent in the past and was happy to see they are still making high quality tents.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Great tent

I actually have the 3-person Ajax, but wanted to write a review anyway. What a GREAT tent. I was amazed with the ease of setup (despite having never done it before) as well as the design. The fact the tent itself is all mesh and the rain fly sits outside of it a few inches, means I had zero problems with condensation inside the tent. I was able to pick up a super inexpensive footprint (it doesn't come with one, but whatever). Gear storage outside the doors is a nice feature too. Also, this tent saw 35+ mph gusts and had no issues whatsoever - and that's with just the corners and rain fly staked (i.e., I put out no guylines). Other tents in my area were bending over and even flipping, but this tent was just fine the entire time! For two people on a four-night trip with temps down to low 40s at night and low 70s during the day, this tent was PERFECT. Having a door for each of us was great too - no climbing over each other to get out!
Any negatives? Just one - would love a couple more mesh gear pockets (there are just two), but that's not a big deal at all.

I love this tent. Light. Tent poles fit in my panniers. Super easy set up. Doesn’t come with foot print- make your own. I’ve used across the country ona. Trip from Virginia to Vancouver Island. Does very well in all condition. I really like the roomy rain fly’s extra space before getting in tent. Nice place for wet boots or gear. Might buy for Boy Scout son.

This is one of the best tents on the market - simple symmetric pole design, sturdy materials, and very well ventilated.

this tent has all you will need to make that 3 seasson camping trip completely worry free .Very easy to set up lots of extra room for storage with two good sized vestibules. stay confidently in the woods when it rains with the Ajax 2 its fully taped waterproof seems. If you need something that will hold up over time and not have you at the laundromat or back on the road home because of a little rain Ajax 2 or 3 person is your ticket...... opt outside.. carry in carry out... keep our public lands clean so we can all emjoy !!!!!!

I bought this tent as a last minute backup a few weeks ago when my significant other took our other tent for a separate trip. The price was insanely low so I went for it. So far it’s been great. I really like how airy it is, it’s mostly all mesh so the air flow is great. It is a 2 person tent but I bought it for myself to use on solo trips. It would be a tight squeeze for two people depending on height and weights of the people using it. Just me, it’s quite comfortable and roomy. The tent packs up nice and small, the assembly is insanely easy and quick. I’ve only used it for car camping so far but it is super light for backpacking which I’m excited to try out. I like the two gear pockets on both corners to keep stuff off the ground. I only give this tent a four star rating because of a few things. It does not come with a gear loft which I wish it did. I like being able to throw everything up top. (Phone, headlamp, keys, etc.) It does have the loops for one so you could easily find a universal sized gear loft to hook onto them from another retailer. It doesn’t come with a footprint and it’s significantly hard to find one that matches this particular tent model. I have looked online and you can find Marmot footprints that match the dimensions though, just wouldn’t match the tent model itself. Those two complaints I knew going into buying it, but the other two things are the zippers. The zippers to both doors and the rain fly are really sticky and tough to open and close in one swift motion. You usually have to do the grab and tug motion while unzipping which can be a hassle, especially in the middle of the night. The rain fly has an unnecessary amount of Velcro patches going up the door flap. Makes it annoying to open and close because the zipper gets stuck in the material and on itself.
All in all, great tent. Glad I found it. Can’t beat the price.

About Marmot

Conceived in a university dorm room by a pair of climbing buddies, Marmot Mountain Works first opened its doors in the spring of 1974 in Grand Junction, Colorado. At the time, the base of operations was a 100-year-old stone building. That same year, the first Marmot down jacket was produced specifically for an action flick called “The Eiger Sanction,” starring legendary actor Clint Eastwood. In the four decades since, Marmot has continued to engineer reliable gear that exceeds the expectations of outdoor athletes. Today, Marmot tents, backpacks, outerwear, clothing and Marmot sleeping bags are still pushing the limits in the planet’s most challenging conditions, from the summits of the world’s highest mountains to the deepest river basins.
