Great Potential . . .

. . . but was not fully met. There is great advantage to having a very light and mostly warm coat as part of an integrated system of outdoor wear; shells of various capabilities, insulating layers, base layers, i.e.layering. The Ama Dablam as a layer would provide unbeatable warmth with great compressibility. As an insulating layer for cold-weather backpacking I don't think you could do better. Without baffle construction it probably is not best suited as a stand alone, do-it-all coat.

While outdoors during a recent cold spell (0 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit) I noticed cold spots along the horizontal seams, mostly along the shoulders and mid Scapula. These were only exacerbated if there was any wind. I know a good shell would ameliorate this but if one goes for a minimalist approach to substainable living this may not be ideal. So, the bottom line, in the proper context/setting this would be an outstanding choice. Just make sure you know what you want/expect and use it consistent within that context. The coat is well constructed with exemplary materials. And Marmot is a great company to work with if you have questions, concerns or comments. I've purchased their products before and will continue to do so in the future. And STP is great to work with as well.
