Versatile

To begin, a big fyi is I love softshell pants!! I now have five pairs of softshell pants all from different brands you see on top of the world's highest peaks. The Marmot High Ridge seem to be the most versatile for me primarily because they breathe really well and are the lightest of the five.
I have not given up cotton but soft shells are kinda like a real All Terrain Vehicle and they really are incredibly versatile and these High Ridge have the best range so far keeping me sweat-free in temps up to 80f and can easily accommodate a second layer for extreme cold..
I do not like convertible pants because the seams and zippers just above the knee bothers me too much; while the High Ridge have a seam because of the nylon knee patches it is very soft and not significant enough to cause me any discomfort.
