Still Not Waterproof

I saw reviews saying this product wasn't waterproof, but figured it was either just limited defects, or that people were sweating in their jackets and mistaking it for the jacket leaking... I've had Marmot jackets for years and always loved them, and wanted another. So I got this one to replace my old Marmot jacket.

I first wore this jacket in a moderate downpour, walking around town in the Pacific Northwest. Out in the rain for only 10-15 minutes, and my shoulders and back got wet. Water was not beading off the outer layer AT ALL. And I was in no way working up a sweat just walking around. I returned it as a defective product (and STP was very great about it) for a replacement.

I got the replacement and ran it under the shower to check it. It seemed to work fine, water beaded up unlike the first jacket, and I breathed a sigh of relief. However, after only a few weeks and being in the same moderate downpours for 10-15 minutes, already water is not beading in spots on the jacket, mostly around the logo on the back, and the shoulders.

Not sure what the problem is, but it seems there may be some sort of issue with the DWR (durable water repellent) application at manufacture. The jacket's not dirty at all and the DWR should be lasting FAR longer than just a few insubstantial wettings. The advice "wash it and reactivate the DWR or reapply spray/wash-in DWR" is acceptable advice for a hard-used jacket I've had for a while, and I've done that before; but it's certainly not acceptable for a practically new, barely used jacket!

I'd give it one star, but I really like the cut and fit of the jacket, it's extremely comfortable for me, and I really love it aside from the heartbreaking lack of waterproofness practically out of the box.

If you need a windbreaker or something to get you from your car to inside and back in the rain, this jacket is going to be pretty good for that. If you need a rain jacket to keep you dry for anything longer than a few minutes in the pouring rain, you'll want to pass on this one.

It's been a disappointment.
