Verified Buyer Reviewed by Tiffany from Pennsylvania on Wednesday, September 28, 2016These are the worst shoes that I have ever bought! I hike about two hours everyday with my dog,I was barely twenty minutes in and felt my first blister. Right shoe definetly has some major defects. Knew that it was too good to be true with a price like this, I guess you pay for what you get!
Verified Buyer Reviewed by judithontheriver from PNW on Friday, September 23, 2016Merrell is always a great choice. Good construction, reliable sole. this is a shoe for a narrow foot. If you have a wide toe box, not suggested.
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Anonymous from SWWI on Thursday, September 8, 2016Sadly too narrow.
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Karen from Michigan on Tuesday, September 6, 2016I'm happy with these. They do offer more support for trail/rock hiking as it's a more rigid sole, but still flexible enough to offer comfort. I always think the sizing on Merrell shoes is a bit off. I wear between a 6.5 & 7 size in Women's. I bought a size 7 and was worried they might be too big, but they are good fit.

They are not wayerproof. I love them, very comfortable!
I don't think they are waterproof like rain boots would be. We were hiking on very soggy, very muddy trails and my socks and feet stayed dry, but I don't think they would have kept me dry in water puddles.
I personally haven't walked through a mud puddle or stream with them but did some trail hiking after rain. My feet stayed dry. I wouldn't say they are waterproof but they water tight.
I'm sorry, I can't answer because the shoes were way too narrow and I returned them
“Would this be a good shoe for first hiking trip to Utah? Also, how should a hiking shoe fit? Should you have extra room, similar to fit of a running shoe?”
Yes - a good first time hiking shoe. In regards to the fit - I am not a professional. I have tennis shoes that are 1 extra size larger and they help my back. The shoes seem "hot" to me but so do all Merrell shoes. I have several styles of their hiking boots/shoes. These have more of a walking shoe feel. Rugged.
I just bought these shoes last month and will be going on a first hiking trip to Utah in August! Mine fit like very comfortable, light running shoes and they should have enough room for a heavier sock. I am breaking them in, but they were instantly comfortable and should be fine for my hiking requirements (light hiking).
