This reel has 4 bearings, one on either side of the handle, and one in front of and one in back of the clutch bearing. Large bail wire, solid feel. composite handle is sturdy and light. I took one apart and was surprised by the quality of the gearing. Bearings are adequate size but not beefy. toler... Read More

    • Picture shows a rear drag reel. Neither are. They are front drag. Very misleading!

    • When I bought my reel, there was a choice, you could buy the 500UL or the 1000R. I chose the 500UL...because I use only one basic lure (1/8 or 1/16OZ single hook Rooster Tail spinners), the ultralight (UL) reel works best for me. After just visiting the item, I see they must be out of the 1000R's.

    • The reel I received when I ordered was the Avocet IV 1000R. It is a nice reel for the price.

About Mitchell

The history behind Mitchell fishing reels and rods can actually be traced back to the mid-1800s when a man named Louis Carpano co-founded a watch gear manufacturing company in Savoy. After the business passed to Louis’ nephew in the early 20th century, the company (then called Carpono & Pons) began manufacturing fishing reels, eventually earning a patent for an open-faced spinning reel in 1950. More models were added over time, including the extremely popular Mitchell 300, which would become the brand’s flagship spinning reel (and is still being sold today). By 1970, the company was manufacturing an astounding 12,000 reels per day. Thirty years later, the Mitchell rods and reels brand was acquired by Pure Fishing, Inc., headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina.
