I went head over heels for this coat when I saw it on the Internet, so I bought one in the camel color to give him at Christmas. He loves it!! It's a very nice coat that fits that middle space between a heavy jacket and a dress coat. It fits him beautifully. We are both so glad I bought it. I just can't say enough good about this coat. You will love it, too.

This coat works with jeans and suits. It is warm and water proof. My son will be wearing it on job interviews and for his time in grad school,

Never mind the claims of "original" and "authentic" -- this is not the coat that won the Battle of Jutland, it's more like the coat that sat through a thousand college football bames starting in the 1970s. The company may have some element of history, but the best thing about this coat is the look. It's a reasonably thick 70% woolen fabric with a plaid lining and will be adequate for fairly cold days, particularly if worn with a warm sweater. If you have a thick lambswool turtleneck that you never found an excuse to wear, you need this coat.

The style has been modified many times over, both for fit and features. This coat does not have flaps over the pockets, it does not have a zipper, it has only one inside pocket and while that's just about large enough for an iPhone 6, larger would be better. It does not have a thinsulate lining or satin in the sleeves. In other words, this is a perfect coat for a casual look for week-ends when the trees are turning color, or to wear to work if you have a job that calls for casual wear. It's also great for tree lightings in December.

The coat I received had an Original Montgomery label, but that seems to be the same firm as John Partridge -- at least they're at the same address. The sleeves were the perfect length -- for me. I haven't had a chance to check how well the toggles are sewn on, but they look okay. Oh yes, their web site says "this first fabric was similar to our current boiled wool- the only difference was the weight-the original was nearly twice as heavy." That should say a lot.

This is a design classic, well made, and looks good on almost every casual outfit, chinos or jeans. Match it with a mid to heavyweight sweater and a plaid shirt.

Beautiful, warm and heavy coat. The first coat I had to send back because one of the closure slings broke after a few days.

  • “My husband ordered the Partridge duffel sized 50 and it seems to be more like a 58 or 60; does this product run very large or did we just happen to get an unusually largely oversized one? If he is a 48 should we exchange for a 46 or 48? Do you have any recommendation?”
Asked by Kathy from Boston, MA on 12/21/2011 12:00:00 AM
    • According to our fit models the Montgomery by John Partridge Classic Duffle Coat does run true to size. Returning for a size down should solve the the sizing difference. If Its just slightly to big go with the 48, If its really big go with the 46

    • Kathy- I just wrote a review on the same subject for this coat. I've wanted one for years, but I ordered the smallest size available at the time (42), and I'm a 40 chest. It was way too big! I finally saw 40's at a decent price, and ordered one, but it still seemed excessively large, and the sleeves were 3" too long. I sent it back and got a 38, hoping that I didn't mess up by not getting a 36, but the 38 is perfect in the sleeves, and not too tight in the chest. It seems I read somewhere on one of the duffle coat manufacturers sites that they actually make coats with longer sleeves that are labeled as such, and wondered if maybe that's what I got. I can't imagine a 3" sleeve difference between a size 38 and 40 chest, since my sleeve size is about 32-33". The 40 had 36" sleeves, according to my tape. Anyway, I had the same problem, but I've finally got the right one, and I am one happy boy! Good luck, and keep trying. He will be glad you did.

    • Winter outerwear, when sized properly, is suppose to fit over layers. So if you wear this coat over a winter weight wool shirt, sweater, & jacket, it should fit fine. If you are wearing a suit, this coat will fit nicely over the suit jacket. Of course, if you like to wear tight clothes, then this is not for you. The idea is that you can put a coat on, over your other winter ensemble, and still be able to move around comfortably. This coat was not meant to be worn over just a t-shirt, or to be tight fitting.

    • Regular sized, but this style it is not fitted. The 38 fit my son in shoulders and sleeves and that is his regular suit size.
