Softshell pants are the most practical I have found for the ever ranging temperatures and weather extremes we can find ourselves in these days. After just a few days of wearing the Mountain Hardware Chockstone’s they seem to be the toughest and most ergonomic of the four different brands I own. The built-in belt is a huge plus for me and while the pants do not have traditional belt loops unlike many other built-in belts the Chockstone’s is removable and allows you to attach cases or sheathes designed for carrying items on a belt.
The articulated fit & cut makes them incredibly comfortable and practical. They also have very tough nylon patches on the inner ankle to protect from rubbing alpine boots and gear cause and they have a zipper on the outside of the ankle to make it possible to get the cuff over and around the boot.
I have an athletic build and at 5’9” the 32-34/ Regular leg would be the perfect fit but I went with the Large waist so I could also use these as an outer shell for severe weather and cold and slip these on over another pair of thin pants. I have a Mountain Hardware softshell jacket made of the same materials and I use a wash-in softshell water-proofer that works quite well.
I wore these twice as the only layer and while they are a bit large but I can get away with it without looking too out of place.
I wore these in the northeast in mid-February in some strange weather going from 25°-75°f with wind gusts over 50mph. And here is where softshell shines! I wore these to run some errands, shopping, and an hour long meeting indoors at 75° and then for a six mile hike along shores of a large lake where the wind was relentless blowing at a solid 20-30mph with gusts. The Chockstone’s handled everything really well with my lower half never getting cold or warm enough to sweat, and while I had to wear 3 upper layers topped off with a down jacket to deal with the swinging temps and wind I never ended up sweating or getting cold.
I have not come across another material that is as comfortable and offers the wide-ranging properties as these softshells do. And if you treat them with a wash-in water-proofer it’s almost like wearing a pair of pajama bottoms that can withstand a blizzard like conditions. I like these so much I hope Sierra gets some more in with the smaller waist as I would love to have another pair of these in a smaller size.
