Plan to use this jacket to walk and ride bike to classes on rainy days. Have not worn it yet, but really like the color of orange (not too bright), and the fact that the men's XL fits me (6'3'' 190 1bs)really well without being too full in the torso. Perfect sleeve length!

I have owned this jacket for 3 1/2 years now and is one of many MH articles of clothing I own. I have always been completely satisfied with their gear, but this jacket is a mess. It repelled water very effectively for the first few months (bought it in winter and it got me through a rainy northeast spring) but promptly lost any ability to keep me dry after that. Others that have reviewed this jacket seem to be very content, so it's possible I got a defective product. Aside from water permeating the shell, the jacket no longer breathes which makes sense if you think about how the waterproof membrane works. As a result, the jacket sticks to my skin and any base layers get damp.
After a couple years coming to terms with the fact that this jacket I spent good money on was a lost cause, I finally ordered a new jacket to replace it. I was very close to ordering a Marmot gore-tex shell that was a few bucks cheaper, but decided to give MH another chance and ordered the MH Ampato shell with the DryQ Elite waterproof membrane. Again, the Ampato gets great reviews so I'm relying on those who already own it to guide my decision, but if the Ampato doesn't live up to its reputation, then I'm done with MH.

This is a very well made and designed light rain jacket. The underarm vents make it very usfull in warmer weather.

I purchased the Epic jacket as a lightweight rain jacket. While I have owned the jacket for a year and a half, two days ago was the third time I have worn it. My dad and I were fishing in eastern Montana during a downpour, I had on my Epic jacket, he had on a Patagonia H2No jacket. I was drenched within minutes, dad stayed dry for the 2 hour duration. Upon inspection, the waterproofing element was peeling away inside the jacket.I tried to return to STP, was told it was too old...plan to ship to mountain Hardwear. I would not recommend this jacket to anyone. Spend your money on a nice Patagonia or Arc'teryx jacket.

About Mountain Hardwear

Starting back in 1993, a small group of outdoor industry mavericks broke away from the pack to follow a less-traveled path. From the very beginning, the primary goal of Mountain Hardwear was to create an outdoor gear brand with a sharp focus on technology-driven design, superior performance and hardcore reliability. The result of this function-first mentality has been an array of incredible Mountain Hardwear jackets, clothing, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags and accessories. Today, after more than two decades of industry-leading innovation, Mountain Hardwear continues to set new benchmarks for dependability in the toughest conditions on the planet.
