Great for traveling on the surface. Have even taken them underground a few times on short trips and they have returned unharmed from the unforgiving cave environment.

This is the second pair of pants that I have purchased. I love the flat hip pockets and the deep back pockets. there is also a zipper pocket on the right thigh that i use for my ID and money (wallet) that is out of the way when I am on the trail. These pants are a sturdy material and weigh in at 1lb and 3/4 oz or 476g. I bought the XL. The only possible issue I could have with these pants are that the "belt" is completely enclosed from 2:00 to10:00 on your hips. Which essentially means that if the belt comes out, or gets twisted up in your pants, you have to fight with it. And if you have a belt cutting into your skin along with a backpack waist belt it might could be uncomfortable. But, I have not found a better pair of pants out there. I love these and the greenish color is cool too. I am 5-9 and 250lbs and the XLs are just about right. I am considering treating these pants with waterproofing material so that I can eliminate rain bottoms from m pack.

Mesa pants have a tough fabric, even though I did rip a hole in the seat by sitting on a log. Did not like the belt and I plan to use suspenders on the next trip. Pockets are like slits and a little tight. Zip off legs and Zip up at bottoms were great for expelling heat. Due to belt situation I probably would not purchase these pants again. But again perfect for cooler weather.

Ok, I love Mountain Hardware. Ttheir reputation of making quality outdoor clothing and equipment is solid and competitive with any other company making similar products. After gaining a pound or two and an inch or two after retiring from a 30+ year career in the military, I needed some new pants to wear traveling, now for fun and not for work. I am not a big fan of convertible pants, because I never wear shorts, but since STP did not have my larger size in the regular MH Mesa pants, I bought 2 pair of these. These are definitely "a keeper", and I will wear them for some time to come, but with some detractors. The overall fit, especially the waist, is just a touch smaller than that in similar pants from competitive companies making them a little less comfortable for those of us in the latter half of our lives and who have enjoyed a little too much career success. Additionally, the top of the front pockets are cut horizontally and close to the belt line. This makes it difficult to reach into them as the angle is wrong, and causes the opening to be a bit tight to allow easy access. Also, I do not like a built in belt as these pants have. It seems every time you wash them the belt gets twisted, and then it is a pain to push, pull, stretch and cuss to get the belt straight again. Also, the belt is only 1" webbing, and when tightened do not hold up the pants well. Unfortunately, you cannot remove the belt, because MH did not include belt loops around the waist to hold a regular belt. Overall, good quality pants, but there are some detractors that keep these from being 5-star.

Very comfortable and fit well. I haven't worn while hikibg yet, hopefully this weekend.

I purchased these pants as a way to minimize the amount of clothing required for a mission trip in Mexico. They served the purpose well providing warmth and a wind break for the evenings and mornings and the ability to convert to shorts during the heat of the day. The material of these pants might be a little heavier than the similar White Sierra Trail pants (which I liked) but they are more expensive.

The built-in belt would probably work well in most circumstances but anything heavy in the pockets and there was a tendency to slip.

About Mountain Hardwear

Starting back in 1993, a small group of outdoor industry mavericks broke away from the pack to follow a less-traveled path. From the very beginning, the primary goal of Mountain Hardwear was to create an outdoor gear brand with a sharp focus on technology-driven design, superior performance and hardcore reliability. The result of this function-first mentality has been an array of incredible Mountain Hardwear jackets, clothing, tents, backpacks, sleeping bags and accessories. Today, after more than two decades of industry-leading innovation, Mountain Hardwear continues to set new benchmarks for dependability in the toughest conditions on the planet.
