Most Helpful 5-Star Review

5.0 out of 5 stars. Really phenomenal jacket
Reviewed by Sebastian from Boulder, CO on Wednesday, September 5, 2018
I was a little weary about getting this jacket considering some of the problems mentioned in the other reviews, e.g. about small pockets and asymmetrical pockets etc. Well, I wonder if they got B stock because what I got does not suffer from these problems: the pockets are decently sized and symmetrical.

Another thing that had me weary was the...let's say interesting design with the softshell top and puffer bottom. Thankfully, in person the look is a lot more flattering. In fact, I will say that if you get this in the right size (form fitting) then it is actually really stylish. The puffer part looks like it's much larger than the softshell in the pictures, but it's pretty equivalent in person and so it doesn't look unbalanced at all.

As far as warmth: it seems to be very warm. I put it on in ~50* weather with some wind and it immediately warmed me up. I haven't had the chance to wear it in freezing temps yet but it feels like it would do the job. My chest and shoulders especially warmed up quickly.

Weight wise, it is not bad at all considering the insulation. You could definitely go lighter, but I don't know that you can go lighter with this much warmth without spending a lot more.

Movement wise I feel comfortable in a full range of motion.

As far as cons go, I have only found one, and that's that the cuff doesn't have closures. If you have thick wrists then you wouldn't even notice, but my wrists are fairly thin and I would appreciate tightness. Worse comes to worst and I will have to wear gloves with a thick wrist, but I think for the price and quality it's worth the trade off.

If I could subtract 1/2 a star for the wrist, then I would, but I don't think it's worth deducting a whole star. So overall considering the quality, style (fashion), warmth, and dexterity, I'm giving this jacket 5 stars.

I wear a medium normally (39" chest/33" waist/5'9") and this hugged my body perfectly.

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Warm!

I haven’t been in conditions yet which require expedition level warmth but this is noticeably warmer than a Mammut Broadpeak I own. Just what I was hoping for. Sleeves could be slightly longer and would be nice if there was some insulation behind the front pockets but that’s probably intentional.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Warm coat!

I love the gold color in this coat. I ordered a small and it was very small in the hips so then I ordered a medium. The medium was substantially larger - much more than I really needed but I kept it because I love the color and this coat is very warm. I do a lot outside in the winter in Wisconsin and this coat doesn't need too many layers underneath and it keeps me toasty warm. It also has plenty of pockets for all your stuff if you are skiing, hiking, etc.

6'2" 178 lbs, Dad bod. Went with a Large. This is a solid jacket, but weird. My girlfriend calls this the "ab jacket". Yes, it looks kind of strange. Some would say in a good way, others in a bad way; I'm not sure yet.

Some in the reviews are saying it's too tight in the waist. I didn't have this problem, It felt normal to me. This does have a waist adjustment with hidden release that is not mentioned in Sierra (Trading Post) description, so my guess is that it was pre-tightened before they tried it on and were not aware it could be released or they just have a bigger midsection/butt than me.

I'm not sure how I feel about the down/synthetic mix. This jacket feels like the sleeping bags I would use when I was growing up from the inside. I kind of like that, but not sure yet. Will need more time with it to determine if the mix actually lives up to my grown-up preference of all down. So far it seems very comfy! I have not tested their waterproof claims, but based on another MH jacket I ordered, I trust it will be waterproof... I mean, I'm not expecting it to withstand a downpour, but I think it will have a moderate waterproofing capability.

Waist pocket's are asymmetrical, as someone else has noted, but someone else has also denied... I dunno... mine was asymmetrical. Seriously. I'm guessing it's to be able to stuff more things in one pocket and keep the other side for smaller items... I guess like different size tupperware? Not one pocket will be "just right", so they give you 2 different sizes? Left pocket reaches to the side of the jacket where the material texture changes on the outside and the right pocket does not go past the shiny nylon.

The neck/hood kind of zips up to a weird place and if you want to leave it open a little at the collar, the whole jacket kind of rests upon that spot. Fully zipped it is kind of tight around the front of my jaw/mouth. Maybe a bit more wear will make this problem a little less uncomfortable.

All-in-all I think this is a 3.5, maybe even 4 star jacket. The thing that really irked me was that there is no way to tighten the cuffs, it just has a very loose elastic band at each cuff. I feel like it was made with one person's(Ueli Steck's) particular needs/fit in mind, so if you fall in line with that person's needs, then you are gonna love it. If it doesn't work for you, then you probably aren't going to see much use out of it.

Extremely warm, comfortable and great adjustable insulated hood. Love the super high collar. Great product for fast skiing on those extra cold, windy, snowy days. Fits as expected - Medium size for 150 lb, 5'-9" male.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Mountain Hardwear Supercharger Dry Q

Used this week for a snow shoe day trip. Conditions were 35 degrees and drizzly and very deep fresh snow. Kept me warm and dry and stuffed nicely in my day pack when it was time to peel layers. I am 6’0’’ 185 and the large fit great but I would say it is an athletic cut which will not work if you’re rockin’ A 40 inch waist. I will upgrade to 5 stars if it performs as well in an environment where I can truly test the waterproof assertion. Bill
