5.0 out of 5 stars. Great 1-Man Tent!
Reviewed by Anonymous from The Pacific Northwest on Tuesday, August 25, 2015
Me - - - - - - - - - - - -Solid outdoors-man. My pack weighs in at 40 pounds so ultralight is not for me.
Mountainsmith Celestial Tent - - - 4.5 stars rounded up
Where Used - - - - - Lower Mt. Hood, Pacific Coast, and Eastern Oregon High Desert.
TLDR - - - - - - - - - -Great Tent. Well sewn, good materials, reasonably light, a little cramped.

As stated, I don't run ultralight and have no problem sloggin a 40 pound old-school external frame pack out into the bush. If you are one of those people who are counting every ounce then this tent is Not for you. But, this thing really isn't that heavy either. It is way lighter than "other cheaper brands" and is a reasonable backpacking tent if you are willing to give a little on your weight restrictions. BUT, only you really know what you need in a tent.

Around here, typically a lot of rain so not having total mesh sides is a plus when the wind is blowing. The rain cover has two "vents". I have seen a couple reviewers complain about rain blowing in thru the vents. Simple.... close the vents. If the wind is hurricane and moisture is still blowing in somehow stick a sock in it.

The materials are excellent. The YKK zippers are whisper quiet which is something you don't get even on a Eureka tent. The aluminum poles are very strong. The tent body is made from light but durable materials. Despite that I highly recommend getting or improvising a footprint. I am lead to understand the Mountainsmith Morrison 2 footprint works with the Celestial tent. One camp the only place to pitch the tent put the edge of one bolder under one corner of the tent, and another at the opposite corner. I did a lot of worrying for nothing as the tent floor did fine and I didn't crack my head in the middle of the night either.

The tent is listed as two person, and like any other two-person tent from any Brand, this means you better be ok snuggling that other person and keeping most of your gear outside. The length is great though. However, me and my dachshund and a lot of gear sprawled out like it was a resort. No sleeping diagonal in this tent. The vestibules under the rain fly are very small. A large pack like mine needs to be right up against the tent on it's side or something is sticking out.

The gear loft is two mesh sacks sewn bottom to bottom which is really, really smart. There is a dual pocket at one end and then on each side the pockets intended to hold an open door can be used for gear as well.

The bag is large as some have pointed out. I assume this is to allow for a footprint. I kind of like not having to fight the tent into a bag but am thinking of getting a compression sack anyway. Hard choice as it fits just fine on my pack. If it bothers you a really cheap alternative is just get some webbing and some buckles and make your own compression straps.

Over all, this is a really great tent. Really well built, and despite what some say the weight really isn't that bad. A perfect tent for that niche between car camping and ultralighting.

Beautiful tent for an intimate couple... so call it my 1-man-1-woman tent; don't want anyone to get the wrong idea!
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars. Not for backpacking

This would be a great back yard tent for kids, but the quality is poor. We like to backpack and are very careful with our gear. The mesh windows got 2 holes in them the second time we use it. and the zipper is breaking slowly but surely. The price is great. But you get what you pay for.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Month-long Ungava Expedition
Reviewed by Paint N Paddle Studio from Vermont on Sunday, September 16, 2018
In preparing for an expedition from Hudson Bay to Ungava Bay, I found myself looking for a one-person tent. By "one-person" I mean what tent manufacturers rate as two. I was hesitant to buy this one though, ironically because it was so cheap! I found it on sale at Sierra Trading Post's new outlet in South Burlington, Vermont for $75! How good could it be? I went over it thoroughly though and it checked most of the boxes. It was early yet (May) and I figured I had time to get another tent if it seemed necessary. Never got around to looking for another tent of course so this one went in the kit as we departed for Montreal and then Umiujaq, Quebec on the east shore of Hudson Bay.

Ungava is famous for horrendous weather and hordes of biting flies, so a good, reliable tent is critical gear. This tent is good and reliable. It stood up to gale force winds and driven rain without a hitch. Its small footprint made it easy to find a space for (good campsites were few and far between on this route) and it was easy to pitch.

My only critique and the reason I haven't given it five stars, is the vestibules. They are miserly; only about 12" at the best so that there is barely room to get a pair of river boots in under them. The resultant proximity of the fly to the interior door also meant that the fly had a tendency to get caught in the door zipper. That was not only immediately annoying but could also eventually lead to leaks. That notwithstanding, I've never gotten so much for so little. This tent came through the long and at times difficult expedition with no damage and appears good to go for next time. A good deal at twice what I paid for it.

Disclaimer: I just got this tent and haven’t used it outside yet.

Super easy setup right out of the bag; color-coded and perfect fit for the poles all around. The design is simple and elegant- no bells and whistles, aka less things that could go wrong/break!

I love that the tent is a perfect rectangle. Two people can fit comfortably in the tent, and there are enough pockets inside to hold valuables.

The color is somewhat dark with the rainfly, so I plan to get some reflective tape to stick somewhere on the tent for finding it at dusk.

I think this is a great value for a sturdy and smart tent. Definitely a good deal for someone who is looking to share the weight load with another backpacker for weekend hikes!
