5.0 out of 5 stars. Quality Built and light

This is a quality built pack for overnighters, or ultra-light backpacking. If you choose this pack as a backpacking pack, make sure you have a small sleeping bag. A standard 2-3lb sleeping bag WILL NOT fit inside the lower from pack compartment. You'll need to use the main body of the pack to carry a standard size sleeping bag. With that it will be tight, but does fit. This pack is ideal of UL hiking, but not a multiday pack. The 40L is adequate for everything you need for a weekend providing you have upgraded gear light and small enough. I loaded this pack up with everything I needed for a weeked using a 3lb synthetic sleeping bag and I got everything to fit. Bag, sleep pad, water filter, stove, fuel, tent, and host of odds and ends. No room for bear canister but with creativity you should be able to make it work for most thru-hikes or overnighters. The pack is long and very narrow. All told, the build quality is superb, well laid out, and very comfortable. This pack does not have a very solid internal frame system, as its designed for light weight loads, but it does just fine. Not much venting on the back but again, not designed for heavy loads. I love it. Its is the perfect intermediate pack between a 30L day pack and a 60L multiday. I picked mine up on clearance for $49. At $100 there may be better options if space is your concern. I needed a mid-size pack and this fits the bill.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. So far so good

I chose this bag for 1 nighters and single day departures from base camp when backcountry hunting trips. Nicely made the subdued green was part of the reason I decided on this pack. It has a lot of external attachment points for items to carry outside trekking pole, tripod spotting scope etc. As others had stated there is not much room in the lower pack for a sleeping bag to work in the normal configuration. Quality is great and it is very adjustable. The sample I received had the webbing straps incorrectly routed thru the buckles and they would not maintain adjustment. took me about 10 minutes to change them over. Wish it had an attached rain cover but can't complain for the great deal.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Good value for a well built pack

I bought this solely as a training pack to load up with weight and get some miles in before backpacking season. It's very well built and comfortable and rides really well on my back. I've done several slightly longer (10 mile +) hikes so far with up to 25 lbs and I am impressed. I paid $49 when it was on sale and for that price it's an incredible deal.
Downsides: for what it is, it is not a really light pack. STP advertises the weight as 2Lb 10oz, but the real weight is 3Lbs 6oz. (I verified this both with Mountainsmith and a scale). I don't care about weight though, since I am using it for training. Also, the mesh sides pockets, which I use for carrying water bottles, are inaccessible without taking off the pack.
I am impressed enough with this pack that I can see using it for winter mountaineering day hikes due to it's bomber construction and plenty of tie down points. It would also be good for shorter summer trips with light gear. My BV450 bear canister fits inside upright.
With some creative use of scissors I can see being able to knock off some weight by trimming off some of the excessive strapping that is used on the pack.
All in all, this is a very nice piece of gear especially for the price I paid.

I bought this pack to use as a carry on bag on an airplane and carry all my climbing gear on a recent trip. Got my whole rack plus boots and a sleeping bag in there, no problem. Looking forward to using this more for my camping and climbing needs.
