These poles collapse to 27 inches, so the fit in a daypack if you lose the trail and have to climb out. And they feel strong. Maybe they don't flex as much as some other poles, but I have faith in their ability to push me and my big pack up tall steps in the backcountry. They also make good adjustable stakes for a fly when you're going ultra-light.
