Nice waterproof outside fabric, very soft inside fabric, beak folds so you don't have to worry about ruining it in storage. The hat seems great! However we put it away for Santa to deliver. Can't give it 5 because he has not put it on or used it yet, but looks great and looks and feels like quality.

This hat is cozy with generous neck and ear coverage and it is really windproof. The sizing may be problematic, though. The large size is the same as a woman's one-size-fits-most. The draw cord does not help to reduce the size. It makes the ear flaps open up instead of hugging the head and the brim still falls over the eyes. The draw cord is located on the lower edge, as if it should snug the hat around the lower part of the head. In order to really change size, and keep the brim from falling in the eyes, the draw cord should be in the space where the hat portion and the ear/neck portion join.

We ordered the largest size after reading reviews for our 2.5 and 4 year old figuring it would fit one of them. It's too large for our youngest and it kept falling over his eyes. Fits our 4 yr old great. He loves it. We live in the wet northwest and thought this would be great for wet cold days. He also doesn't like when snow falls off the trees onto him while snowshoeing and this will solve that problem and keep him dry. Glad we'll be able to get several years out of it. The folding brim is also a nice feature!

My son is 4 with a large round noggin, and it fits him but without any room for growing. Perhaps because his head is large, the ear flaps don't go down very far. I would say that they will protect his ears a bit from wind and cold, but that his ears are still visible, which is why I think it would be a good winter hat for day to day, but if it were super cold I'd put a hat on him with the real lumberjack ear flaps. Very nice looking, very comfortable, and he is more than happy to wear it and keep the winter sun out of his eyes.

About Outdoor Research

The concept for Outdoor Research was devised in 1981 when climber Ron Gregg’s planned ascent of Denali was cut short, ending prematurely with his frostbitten partner being airlifted off a glacier. The cause was a faulty pair of gaiters. During his descent, Gregg resolved himself to create better gear, a resolution that soon led him to build the first pair of award-winning Outdoor Research gaiters. The concept was simple: Make outdoor apparel and gear with a clear focus on reliability. In the many years since, this brand has continued to blaze new trails with cutting-edge products that now include Outdoor Research gloves, jackets, backpacks and Outdoor Research hats, all engineered to exceed expectations in the most demanding conditions on the planet.
