I was in the market to upgrade my down jacket to something a little more sophisticated and a little more compressible. I wanted something warmer because I found I rarely ever used it in lieu of some of my other lighter weight jackets. I live in the PNW so waterproofness is put to the test here in ad... Read More

This jacket is everything they say it is. Very well thought out and constructed. I bought this to be a belay jacket and for the top of Rainier. Even though I really liked it I sent it back because for extreme cold I felt it should have more down filling. The arm filling seemed a bit thin and the torso was ok but I think I might go with the Mountain Hardwear Nilas or even step up to the absolute zero parka. All in all the jacket would be perfect for activities that get down around freezing but this is not a parka. As a jacket for the regular user I give it 5 stars, for mountaineering I give it 3.

I went from a Thermoball duo jacket with a 800 fill down vest layered to this jacket.....WHY....? I like and trust OR's products and Sierra Trading Post made it affordable for me. The Pertrex coating makes this waterproof on it's own and it also doesn't let the feathers escape..The fill....While there doesn't seem to be an overabundance of fill as mentioned in others reviews....I noticed when worn as expected it does in fact keep me plenty warm as expected in an 800 fill jacket. Any cold spots because of taping are momentary actually and is unavoidable for waterproofness as "OR" states.....When layered under my Gore Tex shell it is bombproof and even warmer. I tried this jacket out in our recent -20 windy snowy spell last week....It passed admirably.....The features on this jacket were another selling point for me.,,Love the interior pockets as well as the pack friendly exterior pockets..A bit weird getting used to the heighth though..Apparently you can stuff the jacket into these pockets...... The hood has 3 point adjustment and works well...I like the zippers in that they are fairly rugged.....All zippers have wind/weather protection behind them as well. While, as mentioned elsewhere the amount of fill isn't huge it does as expected and is a great and functional jacket alone or layered......It is easier than the 3 layering I was doing previously and in any activities (in which this was designed for) this jacket excels a LOT.........!!

This is the older model of the Floodlight from OR. It is warm, fits snug and is one of the best jackets I've ever worn. Very satisfied with what OR did with this quality product.

I like a lot of things about this coat. I like the 3 outside zipper pockets. The hood is very nice. I like the color and style. I am a little disappointed that it isn't warmer. In Wisconsin right now it is about 5 degrees. I thought with 800 fill would be much warmer, but you will definitely need layering to keep warm when it gets real cold. So be it, I still like the coat a lot.

I bought this for my boyfriend and so far he's loving it. We've only had it out on a couple excursions with many more to come and it's a perfect combination of warmth & protection from the elements. Love the fact that the front pockets double as ventilation.

About Outdoor Research

The concept for Outdoor Research was devised in 1981 when climber Ron Gregg’s planned ascent of Denali was cut short, ending prematurely with his frostbitten partner being airlifted off a glacier. The cause was a faulty pair of gaiters. During his descent, Gregg resolved himself to create better gear, a resolution that soon led him to build the first pair of award-winning Outdoor Research gaiters. The concept was simple: Make outdoor apparel and gear with a clear focus on reliability. In the many years since, this brand has continued to blaze new trails with cutting-edge products that now include Outdoor Research gloves, jackets, backpacks and Outdoor Research hats, all engineered to exceed expectations in the most demanding conditions on the planet.
