Waterproof Down Jacket... Enough Said!

I was in the market to upgrade my down jacket to something a little more sophisticated and a little more compressible. I wanted something warmer because I found I rarely ever used it in lieu of some of my other lighter weight jackets. I live in the PNW so waterproofness is put to the test here in addition to the need for warmth. I am a huge believer in layering rather than one do-it-all piece but when I saw this jacket caught my eye I couldn't resist the potential of having a down jacket that I didn't have to worry about the rain when raining. Plus this jacket is burly, I mean really tough: I am tough on my jackets so this is a must for me. And yet it compresses down smaller than my 700 fill jacket (naturally) and it weighs less than my previous one (names omitted because my previous jacket was great and served me well). Though no one part of the jacket is all that innovative, it is the combination of the materials that makes this jacket so unique. I cannot wait to get out in the backcountry (before it gets too warm) to test this jacket out.

To top it all off, this jacket fits really well. I am 6'3" tall and around 210. Pretty slender but athletic. The large fits snug but not too tight (as a down jacket should fit). I also tried the Xl and it was huge.

My only complaint is that the zipper is not a two way zipper. Not the biggest deal in the world but it seems to be missing on a lot of jackets in this range.

Lastly, I was somewhat concerned when I read that the baffles were glued together rather than sewn. But then i decided that this is Outdoor Research; they make awesome stuff, they know what they are doing, and the lack of thread means that there is no thread to tear, break, or come out. I expect this jacket is going to be amazing and last a long time.
