This jacket is fantastic. I've worn it in temps as low as minus 17f (ambient) and I've been comfortable with proper layering. The jacket shell appears to be quite durable. It held up extremely well to branches and brush while riding an ATV in the woods so I'm sure it will survive backcountry hiking and can take anything your city has to throw at it. Depending on where you research this jacket you'll see that it has waterproof zippers and a built in balaclava - it does not have either. Still a great jacket though. I had no problems yet with rain getting into the zippers, but finding out there's no balaclava in minus 17 was a let-down.

The jacket fits very well. I bought the medium and it fits my 6' 170lb frame very well. The sleeves fit very well, but I have a +4 ape index
If you find this coat on sale - buy it.

I love OR gear because I am 6'4" and weight 190 #. OR tends to make clothing that is longer in the sleeves and inseam than other top rated gear. For example, a Mountain Hardware jacket has sleeves that barely come to my wrists in size XL, while this jacket in XL provides enough sleeve length to allow me to put my sleeves over the cuff of my gloves and not come off even with full range of arm motion. I have had this jacket out skiing in 19 degrees with the regular underlayer and a light down vest and I was perfectly comfortable. Oh yea, the wind was about 15 mph too. I would definitely recommend this jacket, for the more "ape-like" person who likes longer sleeves. If you have short arms or legs, buy Mountain Hardware stuff!!!

The texture of the clothes is very good, but the sleeves are too long.

About Outdoor Research

The concept for Outdoor Research was devised in 1981 when climber Ron Gregg’s planned ascent of Denali was cut short, ending prematurely with his frostbitten partner being airlifted off a glacier. The cause was a faulty pair of gaiters. During his descent, Gregg resolved himself to create better gear, a resolution that soon led him to build the first pair of award-winning Outdoor Research gaiters. The concept was simple: Make outdoor apparel and gear with a clear focus on reliability. In the many years since, this brand has continued to blaze new trails with cutting-edge products that now include Outdoor Research gloves, jackets, backpacks and Outdoor Research hats, all engineered to exceed expectations in the most demanding conditions on the planet.
