I live in the Pacific Northwest so rain protection is a must year round. I wanted a softshell that would replace my old and ragged one that more than shows its age and overuse. I purchased over 10 jackets in my search to find a good softshell jacket. Most important to me was that the jacket be lightweight, as waterproof as possible, breathable, and suitable for low elevation and high elevation pursuits (yeah i know, the holy grail). This jacket is as close as they come. The hybrid pertex shield panels on the shoulders provide the needed rain protection while keeping the majority of the jacket a true softshell.

The most important, and becoming increasinly more important for all my shells, is the pit zips. I get hot really quickly. I sweat almost immediately when I am working hard. I need a jacket that can dump the excess heat quickly. Although the jacket weighs a little more than others, the trade-offs for me are necessary and worth while. I am also looking at another OR product (Helium HD) for warm summer pursuits when the rain sneaks up on you. Again, the pitzips are what drew me to this product as well.

On a sizing note, this jacket runs a little small. I originally purchased the large and it fit everywhere except the waist. I have experienced this with OR more than once prior. I picked up the XL and it fit a little bigger in the midsection and shoulders but fit much better in the waist. This is a minor trade off. This also gives me room for a down jacket underneath which will be a bonus in the winter. I am 6'3" tall, 42" shoulders and 37" waist with a pretty fit and athletic build (could lose 10 pounds though).

In all, this jacket is awesome and it is one of many recent OR purchases that I have made and loved. OR makes some really cool and innovative products, and they seem to really understand what the customer needs.

Haven't had it in the elements yet, but appears to be of great quality. At this price, you might think there would be more water-proofing; just the shoulder area is water-resistant.

About Outdoor Research

The concept for Outdoor Research was devised in 1981 when climber Ron Gregg’s planned ascent of Denali was cut short, ending prematurely with his frostbitten partner being airlifted off a glacier. The cause was a faulty pair of gaiters. During his descent, Gregg resolved himself to create better gear, a resolution that soon led him to build the first pair of award-winning Outdoor Research gaiters. The concept was simple: Make outdoor apparel and gear with a clear focus on reliability. In the many years since, this brand has continued to blaze new trails with cutting-edge products that now include Outdoor Research gloves, jackets, backpacks and Outdoor Research hats, all engineered to exceed expectations in the most demanding conditions on the planet.
