I have road bike shoes which are difficult and loud to walk in, but lightweight. These are only 2 oz heavier (per shoe) than my road shoes. The soles are stiff like my road shoes (good for efficiency) but the recessed cleat allows you to walk in them. I wouldn't go running or walk long distance in them - I don't think they were made for that. I was concerned that clipping in would be harder with the recessed cleat but it wasn't. These are easy to get in and out of with the BOA system. Push it down and twist to tighten; pull it up to loosen. I have the BOA system on my water ski bindings and gloves too, and love it! I wear an 8.5 and ordered size 41 and they are perfect. My road shoes are Shimano and also size 41, so Pearl Izumi must run similar in size to Shimano. I love that these come with adjustable arch support, too. This is probably a common sense thing, but make sure you take out the original insole before you put in the adjustable arch support insole, otherwise the shoes will be too snug. These are my first MTB shoes and I wish I had gone straight for MTB from the beginning! If you're a novice with bike shoes, I recommend watching a video on how to properly align your cleats, or take them to a bike shop and have them help you. Also for novices, bike shoes do not come with cleats - pedals do, or you have to buy cleats separately.
