It really depends on the activity you are doing..... but if you plan on being out in the single digits or negatives I would definitely buy a size big enough to layer a fleece and thermal layer and maybe even a hoodie. It's great for around freezing if you aren't doing much. Would go colder if you are really getting a good workout.... it's a pretty average insulated ski jacket (not super heavy, not too light). Compared to womens sizes these tend to run a tad small (more like a 4-6 for small not 6-8). I normally order a SMALL even tho I size out for XS because I do like to layer.
