Buying these factory seconds is a great budget option. You can tell these are factory seconds by the hole punched into the tongue. Each boot will be different though, so be sure to inspect your boots to find out why they were discounted as seconds. Mine has a minor cosmetic defect in the part where the good year welt meets the heel on the left boot. On the right boot, there was a chip in the leather exposing the undyed portion on the instep. There is also possible loose grain leather on the instep of the right boot. For the discount, I am able to overlook these defects, but make sure to look your pair over to see if they bother you too much.
Overall, I am very happy about my purchase and these are one of Red Wing’s newer and more modern models. They have an unstructured toe that gives a more slim (less bulbous) look. It is very stylish and durable, so I would highly recommend these. -

The fit is great - I hadn't gotten to try on Merchants before, but I had been sized as a 10D for Iron Rangers in store, so I got the same for these since they are made on the same last and it was the right choice. The color is a dark brown but not as close to black as I thought it would be - even the pictures look a little darker to me than the real thing. Only downside is that there is a bit of loose grain on the right boot, on top of the toe. They are seconds so I hate to mark them down from 5 stars but I've heard many people say you cannot even notice the defect, whereas this is more visually present so I was a hair disappointed. I'm more than happy to keep them as I'm sure it will blend in as they wear, and everything else about them is fantastic.

I've been wearing them for several hours each day since I received them. They were comfortable out of the box. The leather is shaping to my foot and ankle. The color i ordered and received is Olive which resembles, but is darker and much thicker than, the leather in a Desert Boot. I will wear them for general, mostly outdoor work and walks.
A terrific shoe that I will hope to wear for years. I haven't found any defects that make them seconds. -

Bigger problem was the new structureless toe flattened just trying the boots on for a few minutes and pressed down on my big toes. Portended greater discomfort in future, so have to return.
Another issue is the weight, which is at least as heavy as the brand's Iron Ranger. Seems odd, given less structure and fewer pieces of leather. Then again the roughout olive Mojave leather is very thick.
Other than the above points, the boots are beautiful, the color is great, build quality is high and I regret the fact their comfort was compromised for me by the design.
As a note, break in will probably be fast, since the leather's pliable. Would be great if they had a toe box of some sort. Red Wing could surely make the lower profile toe with a matching toe box that doesn't collapse. I'm also guessing the sole material is heavier than it has to be.
If those points aren't an issue, I recommend the Merchant Boot without qualification.

Cannot find any fault in them that would cause them to be factory seconds. They have a great nap and don't seem to crease much at all due to the rough out leather. The only negative I can think of is that they do not have speed hooks, so it takes a while to lace them up and take them off. If you don't mind that, I highly recommend these boots.

Delivery to Taiwan by UPS took less than a week.
I was so happy with the experience that I purchased again from STP soon right after receiving these boots. However, at checkout, my bank flagged up the transaction with STP as ?risky?. I had to call my bank/credit card operator to approve of the transaction. Have there been any breaches of online security issues with transactions at STP? I am informed that each time I make a purchase via credit card (Visa), I would need to notify my bank of the impending transaction prior to checkout for approval.
I was very happy to find the boots in great condition for factory seconds. The only fault I could find with them is there was some excess glue that seeped out from the heel pad inside one of the boots. Otherwise, the boots were cosmetically and structurally sound to my untrained eye.
I bought the boots in size 8D, half a size down from my usual US8.5 - 9. The boots are snug with ample toe room. The suede/roughout leather feels softer than the other leathers and felt comfy quite quickly. I look forward to breaking them in for an even better fit. -
