Great quality boot for the price

I was somewhat reluctant to make a Red Wing shoe purchase online without prior fitting however I couldn't be more happy with my purchase. Here in Australia there is an extremely limited Red Wing range on offer and none of the Engineer line. I used my 877 size of 9.5 EE as a reference and the fit w... Read More

  • Just perfect! High quality and price is amazing...
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Gloria from Southern California on Tuesday, June 19, 2018
I purchased these for my husband, and they turned out to be so much more than I expected! First of all, the black chrome leather is just gorgeous and the level of workmanship is top notch. These turned out to have a steel shank and toe, which was an added plus, although may affect which size is chosen. He typically wears a size 10, so I ordered these in a 9.5 which turned out to be the right size. I know many reviewers suggest a full size down across the board for this brand, but a size 9 would have been too small (lengthwise, as well as snugness of fit) in this case. His feet are just about average in every way (not wide, not narrow, normal instep) so it has always easy for him to find footwear that fits well and he usually doesn't have much of a problem breaking in stiff leather in workbooks, often wearing them all day right out of the box. But in these, he is facing a tougher, longer break-in than usual (maybe because of the steel shank & toe)...
It has only been a week or so and they are already loosening up and becoming more comfortable just with wearing around the house for a few hours a day, so as he starts wearing them out and about more, they should end up being just about perfect (probably after a month or so). These boots look great--the heel and buckles are definitely something outside of his usual style and he is very pleased with them. He never would have splurged on these at regular price, so I'm glad I was able to pick them up for him at such a great price.
The only thing we have noticed that might account for these being classified as seconds is some ruffled leather near the strap across the instep--not really wrinkled as there is no creasing, but I am sure this is where creasing will normally occur with wear anyway, and it doesn't detract from the appearance of the boot at all. I am sure these will last for years and years....
On other Red Wing shoes and boots I have purchased, a tiny hole is punched out in the tongue, and is completely hidden when they are laced. For these boots, the hole is located about one inch below the top of the boot (inner or medial surface) which is not an issue for my husband, but would be visible for those who want to wear these with jeans/pants tucked in. If that is not a concern, I would definitely recommend these boots as this is a great price for this level of quality.

Although it is a 2nd product, it has a very good quality and a reasonably priced high-quality product.
  • Run very small
Reviewed by astronaut888 from Colorado on Thursday, March 29, 2018
I wear a Brannock size 7, spot on. In red wings, when I have been able to locate any offerings in a 6, I jump on them as they tend to run a full size large. Any time I've tried a 7 in red wings they are simply too big. Found these in a 6 and was almost impossible to get them on, and, once on they were mind numbingly tight - not just "need to be worn in" tight, but insanely small. Unsure if this may be attributed to their status as a "second", however, my experience with these particular boots would suggest that one should think twice about the standard red wing sizing. Bummer, b/c these seem to be amazing boots for an amazing deal.

  • “Are they lined & if so with leather or what?”
Asked by Just curious from Boston Ma on 8/6/2018 8:20:45 AM
    • In my opinion, the shoe body is synthetic leather, the leather on the back is a real leather, the laces are also real leather.

  • “How is the sizing on these? I'm 11D on a Brannock and wonder if the 11's would fit.”
Asked by Dave C. from Illinois on 2/4/2018 7:29:26 PM
    • I'm sorry I'm not familiar with Brannock. I just have my own experience with running shoes. My Nike size is 8.5 (actually 8, but Nike doesn't have wide sizes). My RW size is 7D except for Foreman and Beckman which are very narrow. If you have never wear pull-on style before, the first couple of tries would be difficult and may hurt your upper part of your feet a little bit. For pull-on style, make sure your heels are not slippery. The key point is that your heel should be snug fit.

    • I have never been able to detect any flaws in any of the Red Wing boots I have bought from Sierra Trading Post. I couldn't find any gaps in stitching or defects in the leather. They all looked fine to me.

    • We are not given the specific reason that an item has been marked as 2nds. 2nds are usually due to minor cosmetic blemishes or irregularities which do not affect the fit, performance, or longevity of the item. Label is usually clipped or marked by the manufacturer. A small flaw means big savings.

About Red Wing Shoes

With a heritage dating back to 1905, Red Wing Shoes are legendary as an American success story. One Red Wing shoe style was standard GI-issue for WWI soldiers, and after emerging successfully from the Great Depression and the Second World War, the Red Wing brand name became synonymous with reliable, comfortable leather shoes and boots. Norman Rockwell, the artist famous for Americana artwork, even created a series of drawings for Red Wing Shoes. In the 1970s, Red Wing Shoes spread to Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe, offering its popular line of leather work boots and shoes. Red Wing has broadened its scope to offer everything from casual leather lace-up shoes and loafers to rugged work boots to thong sandals. Today, Red Wing runs three production facilities employing hundreds of expert craftsmen, but still makes each pair of oxfords, loafers, work boots and athletic shoes by hand.
