I purchased a pair of the 8166 round toe boots for my husband, and he thinks they are great, so I sort of wanted a pair for myself. I have read all of the reviews on STP and at Red Wing for the various styles and I was interested to know about the recommendations of women who have been buying this brand in men's sizes. I used that information, plus I tried on my husband's boots to get some idea of what I might expect. I ordered his boots in a 9.5, a half size down from his regular size which seems fine. I haven't measured my feet on a Brannock device for many years, but I have been purchasing size 9.5, sometimes a 10 for an athletic shoe in women's sizes for a long time and that usually works out well so I decided to try an 8. The 8166 was not available in that size, so I ordered this pair, and I definitely could not have gone any smaller. I am not sure if it is the moc-toe styling, but these even look a bit small to me for the stated size. I could barely get them on, and needed a shoe horn to do so. There is wiggle room for the toes, but they are quite tight across the instep and the ankle is stiff and inflexible, and is a bit uncomfortable for me to walk in, so these will require some serious breaking in. I would not have been able to wear these all day straight out of the box. I understand from reading the reviews that it is better to have the boots a bit too tight so they will end up fitting perfectly, and I believe that will be the case, as I can already feel them loosening up and conforming to my foot after only a few days of wear. I can only tolerate them for a few hours a day so far but I'm sure they will be fine in a few weeks. I've broken in many pairs of Dr. Martens that started off with a similar fit, and twenty + years later, I still have (and wear) most of them...
As far the defects, I have had the same experience that others have mentioned--I don't know why these are rated as seconds; they seem fine to me. I don't see any obvious flaws--stitching is even & tight, no splotches or discoloration on the leather, absolutely no scratches. Since everyone else seems to agree that these run large, maybe the pair I received were mis-sized? IDK. The quality of the leather and construction is very high. The tiny hole punched in the tongue to indicate that these are seconds is completely covered when the boots are laced up. I'm definitely happy with my purchase and the savings.

I love these boots, however I wore them rock picking, and kicking at a rock that was stuck in the ground, the front of the sole sorta got messed up a bit. Still love the boots, but maybe pick a different sole for resoling later.

Love these boots! Nothing wrong with them despite the factory 2nds label.
These run large, would suggest sizing down. For other women interested - I typically take a 9 in women's heritage boots. Ended up returning the 7 for the 6.5 in these men's mocs.

  • “What is wrong with these boots?”
Asked by Andrew from CA on 6/7/2018 12:29:52 AM
    • Nice boots, In addition to the slightly inclined sewing thread, it is actually a pair of very high quality shoes.

    • We are not given the specific reason that an item has been marked as 2nds. 2nds are usually due to minor cosmetic blemishes or irregularities which do not affect the fit, performance, or longevity of the item. Label is usually clipped or marked by the manufacturer. A small flaw means big savings.

About Red Wing Shoes

With a heritage dating back to 1905, Red Wing Shoes are legendary as an American success story. One Red Wing shoe style was standard GI-issue for WWI soldiers, and after emerging successfully from the Great Depression and the Second World War, the Red Wing brand name became synonymous with reliable, comfortable leather shoes and boots. Norman Rockwell, the artist famous for Americana artwork, even created a series of drawings for Red Wing Shoes. In the 1970s, Red Wing Shoes spread to Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe, offering its popular line of leather work boots and shoes. Red Wing has broadened its scope to offer everything from casual leather lace-up shoes and loafers to rugged work boots to thong sandals. Today, Red Wing runs three production facilities employing hundreds of expert craftsmen, but still makes each pair of oxfords, loafers, work boots and athletic shoes by hand.
