I'm a solid size 8 across many brands. Since this is online shopping and I never know exactly how things will fit, I purchased an 8/29 and 10/30 to try on. The 29 barely made it over my thighs/waist. I was able to button it but had enough muffin top to open a bakery... The 30 was better, but I may get the 31 to try as well.

I tried & returned the Shasta pants a while back, as I couldn't really figure out the point: If worn hiking, the nicely lightweight fabric seemed like it might be easily ripped since it was so loose and flowy in the legs, and the pants were too unflattering to wear for ordinary non-hiking wear. These shorts, however, seem less prone to rips, since they have a closer fit (being shorts), and they're more flattering (on me, anyway). Do size up, though, unless you have very narrow hips: I'm generally around a size 2, and the 26 was tight in the hips and butt on me. The 27 is perfect. (The 28 was OK, too, but needed to be cinched tightly with the drawstring lest they sit on my hips.)

These are similar to the Icebreaker Shasta pants in the same fabric and style. However, while the 31 in the pants were comfortably roomy, the shorts were tight. I am 5'7," curvy and wear an 8 in pants. If they were available in a larger aize I would definitely buy them. The fabric is comfortable, lightweight but not flimsy, and drapes well.
