I wear this top hiking and running. Also under my shirt when cold out. A favorite undergarment. Sometimes the little thumb holes are good to use when windy out. Most of the time i don't use them though.

Members of our family all appreciate the warmth and comfort of Smartwool and this top is no exception. It made our son smile at Christmas and kept him warm on a long fishing trip.

I bought this for my husband's outdoor activities (skiing, biking ) but he wears it everywhere. The fit is spot on ( slim but not constricting or overly tight- many physiques could wear this, honest.) Sleeves are generous in length, and the thumb holes are great for preventing drafts up the arms. Construction is great. The fabric is supple, soft, NO ITCH, warm when damp; the neck high enough to prevent drafts. Zipper very smooth, so no bunching on shirt front. A really great winter layer- even looks good worn around town. Very highly recommended. (and if you've priced Smartwool elsewhere, you know to buy it at STP!)

First, the sizing of Smartwool is roomier than Icebreaker so pay particular attention to your sizing selection. Second, my opinion is that Smartwool has better overall quality control than Icebreaker so all the Smartwool I owned are of the highest quality.

On the performance, the product is typical of a fine weave merino wool technical top. However, since the fit is roomier than my Icebreaker Bodyfit 260g/m2, though the weight of the this piece is at 280g/m2, it is less warm than the Icebreaker Bodyfit. I used the dryer at the lowest setting to reduce the size a bit, but the outcome is not as desireable as proper sizing.

I love Smartwool. I prefer the quality of Smartwool over Icebreaker. But for a lean, athletic, type body, Icebreaker has better fit. (I am 5'10" tall at 158 lbs and 30" waist.)

In Summary, this is a fantastic mid-weight layer.

This is a great heavy base layer on cold days, or as a top when very active. Thumbholes and 1/2 zip are great for keeping you warm when you need it, or dumping heat when you don't. Nice quality and build.

My husband ordered this as a base layer and ordered larger than usual, as other reviews said it runs small. It is actually sized more like a fleece overshirt, rather than a base layer. Returned the XL for L. Now returning the L for an M. Hope this one works! Great quality.

I expected this to be a little heavier. More midweight than heavyweight. Sleeves are too short for me to use thumb holes - I'm 180, 5'11" with long arms. Generally I'm on the line between medium and large, I bought large not wanting an athletic fit. General fit is good, loose but not baggy, but arms are shorter than I'd like. Given all that, it's still a nice and comfortable shirt.
