I also have the SmartWool PhD SmartLoft Divide jacket. I wore the SmartLoft Divide on my backpacking trip to the Grand Canyon around November 2014. The front of my chest was warm (where the smartloft was located), but my back was cold. I had to wear two base layers underneath for warmth. I liked the form fitting so I purchased the SmarLoft jacket which pads front and back - this kept me warm by itself without the extra layers under. If this version came with just the smartwool sleeves instead, that would be even better.

I just had to have this jacket but it's the first SmartWool product that I am returning. I am 5'11"; 175; 42 chest and a large in SmartWool has always fit me perfect or a little snug and this jacket was no different but the armpits are very tight. The material is a mesh for breathability but the design one long strip that runs from the elbow to rib cage and it bunches up into a wad of material that I could not ignore. It's going back

This jacket feels really warm and might be perfect as a midlayer for skiing or very cold weather, lower intensity activities, or great to wear as a casual jacket. Unfortunately it didn't fit me well. I'm 5'8, 215 lbs. with a 45 in. chest and 38 in waist. I ordered a large since I'm right in between large and extra large for the chest size and since this is likely meant to be worn over layers so I thought the smaller size would have the bit of room for it to fit well for me to wear without more than just a lightweight baselayer shirt underneath. Unfortunately the chest and waist area were tight while the sleeves and back felt a little too loose so I don't think sizing up to XL would give me something I can use comfortable under other layers. It would probably be too bulky. I'm disappointed this didn't fit because I really like the feel and look of it.
