Thought these shoes were cute but had to return them. I wear inserts and each shoe is a chance. One of the other raters had said the treads were not deep and I agree. They are a little smooth for hiking.

I bought these and am keeping them, but...I hiked in them once and ran a little. They are comfortable, shock absorbing and you can lace them up to get a good fit. But...the tread design is not great -- when there's loose material (small rocks, sand) the tread lugs (especially in the toe area) are not really deep enough to get a good grip. And -- this is the big one -- I would not wear these in wet conditions at all. After my hike, I stopped in a restaurant and used the restroom; there were a few drops of water on the tile floor and when these shoes hit them my foot almost slid out from under me. Whatever the opposite of a grippy sole is -- that's what these shoes have. The rubber compound makes them incredibly slippery on wet hard surfaces. Luckily, I'm in California whee it never rains (so I'm keeping them) but be careful..

The Boatman's Bottom Line: I liked these so much that I bought two pairs; one for hiking and one for trail running.
Fit: Some stores tell you to buy a half size up in this model. I like my trail running shoes to feel secure, so I bought my normal size. These shoes have a firm toe box and heel cup that keep your foot from slipping around in the shoe as you navigate turns and hills. The upper is tough enough to take trail wear and tear, yet there are no hotspots when you lace them up.
Cushion: They have the perfect amount of cushion. It's thick enough that you don't feel the pain of every rock, but thin enough that you don't lose touch with the trail. If you've owned NB's Fresh Foam Zante, this trail running version has a more firm cushion that's more fit for the trails.
Sole: The treads on the sole are big enough for mud, yet grippy enough for rock.

These shoes fit my feet perfectly and they were light and comfortable but they started to crack and started to fall apart after 70 miles of hiking. I didn't use them for running or I'm sure they would have broken down sooner. I should have listen to the other reviews that mentioned the same problem.

Great sho~it was suggested to order 1/2 size larger but maybe 1 full size would be better.

Have always been a New Balance Fan - Shoes are comfortable and soles are great... but uppers fall apart quickly! Uppers started cracking and disintegrating within two months of moderate use.
