For 40$ you get a hellva rod. I have bought many as gifts for friends and family. Easy to cast, and casts smooth, far and soft. I have had 600$ sage, Scott, and G. Loomis rods so I know what quality is and have been fly fishing Northern California streams and Rivers since 10 years old. It has no glue drips, and nice little details like dots at the rod piece joints to easily line up the sections quickly and correctly the first time. This is the cheapest in their line, but still works great. By far the best fly rod bargain going and a rod worth having by any fly fisherman no matter what the experience level. It may have been made in China, but the Chinese factory and skilled workers who made it clearly know how to make rods. If you fly fish, or are interested in getting into the hobby, this is well worth buying.

Although Ross describes the action of this rod as "medium/fast", I would say the action is closer to medium. The slower action isn't a detriment on a 3 wt rod used to present small flies at moderate casting distances. I had a blast catching small bass and bluegills on this rod. This is the second Ross fly rod I have purchased from STP (the other was a 9ft, 9wt RX), and I don't think you can find better rods for the price.

A bit over "soft" in the middle, definitely light action -but it's a 4wt, get the job done. Price is a winner, and a first time caster (as in small youth) will find this a good starter rod. Great deal, workmanship seems more than par for the price-level. No excuse not to carry this hiking in case the unscheduled creek or big flats comes upon you!

I have this in the 9' 6" 5wt. It cast great with dries or nymphs. I just ordered the 9' 5wt for my wife. Great deal!

  • “Does this Ross FS rod include a case?”
Asked by Bob from Al on 7/5/2016 10:47:36 AM
    • The 1st one that I ordered months ago did, it was the 10" model. This one unfortunately did not. Great all around rods though, well worth the price with or without the case. Casts both dry flies and multiple nymph rigs very well.

    • No, A delicate 4wt. good for creeks, river holes, nicely made for price, so purchase of case not huge deal killer
