Nice!Reviewed by Crowinghen from WA on Monday, March 19, 2018I usually buy Icebreaker merino wool, but couldn't pass on these with STP's great deal. PLus my IB's are a little thin and delicate, so I purchased these. I am a woman, bought the men's Medium and they fit okay ( not super glamorous, but hey they are longjohns. The waistband is a little iffy- it's wide and I feel like if I am not careful it will roll or get twisted, so I am careful. Very soft and warm these are great for cold weather activites or even pj's.
Smartwool ComfortVerified Buyer Reviewed by Boundary Waters Hunter from Wisconsin on Sunday, December 10, 2017I enjoy the true fit of these bottoms and how comfortable they are. This layer helps in keeping me warm on stand when hunting and when it gets real cold I will layer with the 150's then put these over the top of them. Their moisture wicking ability & odor elimination is a huge plus.
Great ProductVerified Buyer Reviewed by NCGator from North Carolina on Tuesday, November 14, 2017Great base layer for any outdoor activity in the winter months - keeps you warm, keeps the moisture away and is lightweight.
Lovely pantsVerified Buyer Reviewed by Zhang from Orgen on Monday, October 30, 2017Great blend of cotton-wool fabric, nice cut and color,.
Better than expectedVerified Buyer Reviewed by OrangeCrush from Colorado on Wednesday, October 25, 2017Would definitely recommend. Warm and soft. Used while wading cold mountain rivers.
Great fit and feelVerified Buyer Reviewed by Andy from You name it, I have eather been their or I am headed that way on Saturday, October 21, 2017I have been wearing Smartwool for years and I do not think I can go back to wearing anything else. This base layer feels great, they are not to tight or confining and keep me warm but at the same time wick the moisture away when I start getting overheated.
I try to catch Smartwool when it is on sale because it is a little pricy, but if I really need it, I will get it at full price because it is a quality product.
AwesomeVerified Buyer Reviewed by Mule deer from Nevada on Tuesday, October 17, 2017Very much worth the money. Took these on a October mile deer hunt at 10,600 ft and they were awesome. The best part is they keep you warm but after hiking all night to get where you want to be In the morning is the sweat doesn't soak them like it does cotton and your legs can breath! Very comfy and well made. Wore them for 3 straight days with no issues.
GoodVerified Buyer Reviewed by Tiny72 from North Dakota on Wednesday, October 4, 2017First time trying these. I work in the oil field and wanted to get something the was not synthetic. It is cold outside right now and these are doing a great job as the keeping me warm. The do not slip down and don't irritate my leg hair. For their price you can not beat it. I will be ordering more for the upcoming winter because here in North Dakota -40 is not a big thing.
Baselayer comfort and performanceVerified Buyer Reviewed by Mark from Colorado on Tuesday, October 3, 2017Have only worn once. Performed hiking trail maintenance this past weekend in the mountains with lows in the 30s. Despite strong winds and rain, kept me warm in my sleeping bag all night. Cannot judge durability at this point so holding back one star. Fit was good, but were a little loose for me - size large for 6'2" with 35" sleeve at 185 lbs.

Can these be worn by itself to bed at night during Cold, WINTRY nights?
Mens size 36 is a large so will this shrink considering it's mostly merino wool? Generally wash warm then low-med heat dry.
Hello!, you can wear it to bed itself. I wash it in machine cold water and just laying it flat to dry to prevent shrinking.
I hope this helps.
I have worn these winter camping near the Canadian border, and they do a great job as a second base layer. During the many nights I have slept while camping there, I have never worn these by themselves under my 4-in-1 military sleeping system. I always had at least two more layers on both my legs and torso. That's when we're talking -30 F temps sleeping in a regular tent.
As for the sizing, I have a 33" waist and I got an XL, which turned out to be a bad idea - but not too bad. It was just a little too loose, and still is after many uses and washes. So I got a large and it fit me perfectly. I use just the regular cycle on an HE washing machine with the temperature setting on warm/cold. I always hang dry my merino wool stuff though. I would imagine that low heat would be the way to go if you do decide to dry it.
In short, I would probably go with the XL if your waist size is 36.
As to shrinkage, I have not noticed any with this item or any of the SmartWool base layers (men's and women's) I have purchased over the years. Cannot answer as to the bottoms keeping you warm during cold winter nights because it would depend on everything from actual room temperature (what's cold to you may be cool to another person) to what blankets/comforters you use. There are warmer base layers than this product.
I have worn these SmartWool base layers by themselves. If I am hiking and it gets too hot I have taken off my outer shirt and hiked in just the SmartWool base layer top. I am 5' 8" tall and weigh 158 lbs. and 34" waist and 37" chest I get a size medium bottom and a size medium top. They fit next to skin and I believe they are warmer than polyester base layers. I have never had any of these shrink however I wash them in cold water and use Nikwax Wool Wash and hang up to dry, I do not use a dryer for them. SmartWool makes a quality product, I like them very much.
Yes, they are very comfortable to wear, even after 15 hours. I have not noticed any shrinkage as you normally do with wool.
The answer depends on room temperature, blankets, etc. On nights below freezing, I wear these as a base layer in my sleeping bag while camping out in a three season tent. They help maintain my body temperature and allow me to sleep comfortably. I am a 36 waist and the large fit me perfectly. I wash them according to the SmartWool instructions and air dry with no shrinkage.
