I've had mostly great luck with Smartwool, except for two "ultra 150" shirts I bought 5-6 years ago that quickly developed pin holes everywhere. I really wanted a very lightweight, quick drying shirt for backpacking, but because of my earlier pin hole problems, I was reluctant to purchase another light weight Smartwool shirt. From the start, this new PhD light shirt seems much better. Maybe it's the addition of polyester to the mix that makes it feel more reliable, but the structure feels much stronger & I have confidence it will positively stand the test of time. The addition of polyester also allows this shirt to dry much quicker (I put it in the washing machine & after the spin cycle I hung it on a chair back in the kitchen. It was completely dry in about an hour ... a real benefit for backpacking!). Though this shirt seems very well constructed & dries quickly, the material seems quite a bit heavier than the lightweight Smartwools I'm used to. my initial impression is that it'll be too warm for summer. Plus, the sleeves are very long ... much longer than necessary to accommodate the thumb holes. Overall, the PhD light seems to be a very well made product, but may be more of a 3-season shirt and too warm for summer hiking.
