The picture doesn't quite capture that. It's almost like your heel is surrounded on three sides by a circle of sole. I was okay with that, but also know that the heel cup is somewhat shallow. I did not feel like my heel would stay in the shoe -- like if I flexed my foot hard my heel would pop out. So I reluctantly returned them, because Sorel is a great brand.
