  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Nice shoe but...

I've previously had two pairs of Sperry Topsiders but haven't worn the brand for at least 5 years. The Sperry Defenders that I purchased are a little narrow (tight) around the widest part of my foot. So while I normally wear a 9, the 9's were definitely snug. So I reordered a pair of 9.5 and they feel great. The shoes are much lighter in terms of weight than they were 5+ years ago and for these Defenders, sport cloth laces as opposed to the natural leather laces. Still they are an awesome value from Sierra at $39 per pair. After several wearings, the 9.0 pair are stretching out a bit while the 9.5 feel way more comfortable.

Size and quality as usual. Black dye is coming off all over socks or bare feet. Hope the dye stops decorating my socks and feet soon.

Quality is what is expected. Slightly tight and with even after wearing it several times. Still usable but more narrow than I had expected. More narrow than I have had with Sperry previously.
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars. Sizing is WAYYYY off

The shoe was of great quality like all the sperry shoes I own, however I was extremely disappointed in the sizing. I know that buying shoes online can be a bit hard if it's a brand your not familiar with but ALL of my sperry shoes are the same size. I have 6-7 pairs, different styles and colors and this is the ONLY shoe that I've had this issue with. Size 13 is more like a 11. Very disappointed.

About Sperry

After a slippery boat deck nearly sent him overboard, lifelong sailor and inventor Paul Sperry created the first pair of Sperry Top-Sider boat shoes in 1935. Determined to find a solution for better traction, Paul carved small grooves into the bottom of his rubber-soled shoes, called “siping.” His idea for the prototype was actually modeled after his dog’s paws, which had evolved to navigate slick, wet terrain. Today, Sperry boots and shoes combine siped rubber soles for outstanding traction with advanced technical fabrics to keep out the watery elements. Over the years, Sperry boat shoes have even become the official footwear of the U.S. Sailing Team, the Shimano Fishing Tour and the U.S. Naval Academy.
