I was doing this the wrong way - scraping at an angle. Place the side surface down, scrape with a knife, and then when you get enough magnesium in a pile, use the sparking edge the same way. I was able to set paper towels and other small items on fire this way. You should be able to set larger items on fire just by scraping more magnesium off.

    You need to strike the sparking rod with the sharp blade of a knife, not the back, to generate a few weak sparks. The Mora Magnesium starters work much better.
