Summit as in Best

I purchased these boots to wear while photographing waterfalls in western North Carolina. Getting to some of the waterfalls can be rugged trekking, thus rugged boots. I wanted thick leather boots because the area has copperheads and rattlesnakes, and the leather thickness of these boots seemed like adequate protection. Fortunately, I did not have to put these boots to the venomous snake test. I saw plenty of snakes but I kept my distance.

Let me say at the outset that these are the most comfortable hiking boot I have ever worn, bar none. I have worn Merrell, Asolo, Vasque, Keen, and Danner. They are all great boots, but I like these Alico Summit boots the best. Breaking them in was a snap. Yes, they are stiff right out of the box, but after wearing them every day for a week around the house and around town, they broke in nicely.

Throw away the insole that comes with the boots; they are worthless. Replace them with Green Superfeet insoles and you will be ready to go. The thicker Superfeet insoles will also help the boots fit better. I wear a size 8.5 M, and that is the size I bought. Even with the Superfeet insole I have enough room to wear a thick hiking sock, or a thinner hiking sock with a sock liner. I probably could have gotten by with a half-size down, but that runs the risk of the boots being too short. I recommend you order your regular shoe size, replace the insoles with thicker ones, and plan on wearing thick hiking socks. Then you and your feet will be in for a backpacker's treat.

If I could make one change to the boots, I would put a rand across the toe to keep them from getting scuffed up. These are beautiful boots and getting them scuffed is tantamount to getting that first scratch on your new automobile. But putting a rand on the toes would break up their line and make them less beautiful. So I don't know whether this is a good idea or not. Alico claims this leather is water resistant. I don't know because I waterproofed these boots with Nikwax Leather Proofing. It worked.

The bottom line is if you want a classy, sturdy, rugged, super comfortable and supportive hiking boot, purchase the Alico Summits. You won't regret it.
