A Nearly Perfect Softshell

This is my second Apex Bionic-- that is how much I love them.

While no garment is "perfect," for me this is as close as any softshell has come. My first AB is now going to be a permanent part of my mountain rescue go-bag, as it has always been something I grabbed on my way out the door no matter what season I was performing a rescue in. That's because the AB is a wonderfully versatile jacket for all kinds of needs. As a sole layer of outerwear on a relatively mild day, a layer during cold weather, or to keep you dry during a short walk in light rain, the Apex Bionic belongs in everyone's closet.

Suprisingly, I have found the AB to be rather abrasion-resistant. I have stumbled a few times on wet rocks during steep climbs, only to inspect my AB and find that the fabric still looked great. I was skeptical about this, since past experiences with other brands have shown similar softshells to be very prone to abrasion damage, however such is not the case with the AB.

Now, let me make some things clear. This jacket is not waterproof, nor will it completely block wind. If you purchase it expecting it to be like a Goretex parka, you will be disappointed. It covers the torso and arms well, but is not parka-length. The Apex Bionic has its place in my gear lineup, however is just one of many jackets I own, each with specific uses in mind.

The only negative I have to say is that the pocket zippers feel delicate and flimsy. The teeth are fine-pitched and I am afraid they would jam, possibly permanently, if anything is caught in them.
  • Best Uses: Intermediate cold layer, Shell for a mild day
  • Cons: Pocket zips feel delicate
  • Pros: Easy to clean, Easy to stow, Light Weight, Not bulky yet warm, Relatively wind-blocking, Water repellant
