OK, so it's long for a reason. This is an expedition weight base layer, not a 1/4 zip fashion item. It is intended to keep cold out and that means extra length to prevent ride up. I am 5'9" and the L fits exactly the way I would expect. pretty much falling right across my crotch area, several inches below the waistline. Sleeves are equally sufficiently longer than normal to prevent cold intrusion. Remember this is Expedition weight, not lightweight, medium weight or heavy weight. I wore this base layer as a 2nd-layer over tech t-shirts and under a constantly changing collection of mid and outer layers during a three day camp and hike in the White Mountains in mid-February. Temps in the single digits to mid twenties the entire time. This top and the matching expedition weight pants stayed on for the entire long weekend, day and night. These were probably my best purchase with respect to the winter camping trip.
That said, this is a cold weather specific garment. Don't expect that you will wear it when the weather is warm. You will burn up.

The material is no doubt expedition weight, and seems extremely well constructed. I'm 5'7" 165lbs and the Medium (M) fits shoulders and torso just about as I would expect with a nice athletic hug. That's where my love for this base layer ends, however. The length is simply ridiculous and falls well below the buttocks all the way down to my thighs. The sleeves are also about 8 inches too long--no exaggeration. Someone at North Face quality control was AWOL on the day this base layer top came off the assembly line.

About The North Face

Believe it or not, The North Face story didn’t begin on a high-altitude ascent. It actually began in San Francisco at less than 200 feet above sea level. However, what started as a neighborhood mountaineering shop has since evolved into an industry-leading, award-winning outdoor equipment and apparel brand. Since its inception more than 40 years ago, The North Face has grown to include clothing and gear designed for nearly every type of adventure, from alpine skiing to backpacking to trail running. Today, The North Face jackets and pants are chosen by world-class athletes, and The North Face rugged boots help carry explorers through the toughest terrain, from the icy slopes of Everest to Utah’s Green River basin.
