The coat is decent at keeping you warm, but there are no bells and whistles to speak of. Plain and simple mild winter coat. No drawstring hem to keep snow out of your pants or any kind of cinching element for the hood to keep it on in any amount of wind. The pockets don't have zippers or snaps and are ill lined if you have the coat on with the water-resistant side out, but fine the reverse way. I bought my 10 year old son the medium - it fits him, but is boxy due to the nature of the insulation and the sleeves are about 2 inches too short. He wore it out in the snow to play before I could send it back.

To be honest my son is probably a size 9, except that doesn't exist for boys. He's thin so when choosing between an 8 or 10-12 I choose 8. This coat was definitely on the small size, especially in the arms. Otherwise he loved it.

I have always had great products from North Face; combined with the great price from Sierra Trading Post you cannot go wrong. I bought this for my son who loves it, and it is sure to see it fair share of "wear and tear". If my evaluation changes, I will update my review.

  • “My son is 7 years old and about 60 lbs. what size would he need?”

    • I recently ordered this jacket for my son. He is 10 years old and 78lbs. I ordered the size Large and this fits him well with some room to grow into.

    • I always go a size up so I would get a size 10 to give him wiggle and growing room, plus allow him to use sweaters or hoodies underneath his jacket. My grandson is 12 and weighs 80 lbs and I got him a size 14.

About The North Face

Believe it or not, The North Face story didn’t begin on a high-altitude ascent. It actually began in San Francisco at less than 200 feet above sea level. However, what started as a neighborhood mountaineering shop has since evolved into an industry-leading, award-winning outdoor equipment and apparel brand. Since its inception more than 40 years ago, The North Face has grown to include clothing and gear designed for nearly every type of adventure, from alpine skiing to backpacking to trail running. Today, The North Face jackets and pants are chosen by world-class athletes, and The North Face rugged boots help carry explorers through the toughest terrain, from the icy slopes of Everest to Utah’s Green River basin.
