I camped in the snow with this pad. Temperatures were around 15 to 20 degrees. The pad is sturdy and well-constructed, and it adds a certain amount of insulation and comfort.

However, the snow still melted below my tent, even though I had a 0 degree sleeping bag, this pad, a tent, and a tarp. I didn't get wet, but I guess I hoped that the pad would provide a little more insulation than it did.

Thermarest ridgerest solite is just what you need. Light weight so you don't mind carrying it and it does what it should: it keeps you off the ground. Very comfortable for it's small thickness.

Inflatables are far more comfortable than closed cell pads, but far less durable and reliable. You can carry patch kits, however, leaks can be hard to locate and a flat pad can ruin your trip. Many would find a closed cell by itself lacking in comfort. Yet, it's a heck of a lot better than nothing at all. Personally I'm used to sleeping on hard surfaces and will sometimes carry just this pad. Given the choice I use it under an inflatable. Especially in winter as it really boosts the insulation. As far as closed cell pads go, this thermarest ridgerest solite is the best I've tried. Somewhat bulky, but I roll my tent in it and stuff both in a the tent sack. That seems to minimize the space it consumes. With STPs price minus the deal flyer discounts, there's no reason not to have one. I should mention there are other pads which combine a closed cell and an inflatable layer which accomplishes the same thing as 2 separate pads. The plus side to separate pads is versatility. Kelty does makes a dual pad which can be separated if you choose, but I've never tried it.
