Reviewed by tobor the 8th man from Smoky Mountains on Saturday, April 20, 2013I originally ordered the "small" version of this bag, but discovered that it was smaller than an average gym bag and too small to accommodate size 10.5 shoes plus gym clothes. I exchanged the small for the medium. The medium size is actually larger than an average gym bag--much larger. This might be an issue if your intention is to carry the bag to the gym on a daily basis especially if you're just taking shoes, shorts, shirt and toiletries.
The bag is designed to be taken to races where you need to carry lots of gear, nutrition, etc. Although I was ultimately hoping for a bag for daily gym use, as an ultra-runner who travels often I can appreciate the size and features of the medium. The bag is laid out very well with isolation compartments on each end, mesh panels on the side, and a zippered panel inside the main compartment. Anyone who participates in races where you loop or have stages will appreciate both the storage and design of the bag--it makes finding your stuff very easy when you're trying to get through a pit-stop quickly. As the photos show, the bag also has shoulder straps so the bag can be carried like a backpack. This might be fine for short distances, but the bag is absolutely NOT a backpack, so don't think you can use it as one. The backapck features seem mostly there to carry your gear from the car to your staging area--not to hit the A.T. or even use around campus on a daily basis. The backpack straps can be removed, and you probably will want to take them off if you're not gong to use them as they get in the way of carrying the bag normally.
As to quality and price--the quality looks decent, but I'm not convinced it is anything really special. It certainly isn't flimsy or cheap, but it appears to be made of the same ripstop as most other bags on the market. Even at the discount price I think it's a bit steep. You're definitely paying for the brand name--which isn't to imply that the bag isn't good. The design is excellent for people with very specific needs and the quality seems good--if you need a bag for racing and don't mind paying a bit of a premium, then this is a good choice.
Reviewed by Won't Settle for Less from Update New York on Thursday, April 11, 2013I haven't used this yet but plan to take an 8-day bike trip in July and the quality is very good and I think it will be large enough to put what I'll require and I can use it backpacking in the Adirondacks too!
Reviewed by Modern Dad from Los Angeles on Tuesday, April 2, 2013Bought this bag(Medium) because I needed a gear bag that can double as a travel bag. I know it is not a travel bag when I bought it but I wished it had those built in loops to use a padlock . I ended up using the holes in the zipper to secure the bag with padlocks. Materials used seems durable. Did a 2 week trip in Mexico and it held. Zippers used for the side compartments could be burlier. Some reviews say that the backpack straps come off easily which they do but a non issue for me. Water bottle holder is small which doesn't fit standard cycling water bottles. It's still a great back and with the lifetime warranty I highly recommend this product.
Reviewed by craigerino from Lost Angeles on Thursday, March 21, 2013Like all Timbuk2 bags (we have about 10), this one is functional, HUGE and built like a tank.
Verified Buyer Reviewed by Sandy from Boston, MA on Saturday, February 23, 2013I ordered this bag just in time for my 10 day trip around Israel, and it was PERFECT. I'd ordered a different duffel from another manufacturer and it was incredibly basic and unimpressive. I've never owned anything from TimBuk2, usually because it's a bit pricey. Now I see why. This bag has not one but TWO end compartments for dirty shoes or whatever else. Then having the option of carrying the bag with normal handles or using the backstraps is maybe the bag's greatest feature - especially if you plan to be on the move a lot or walking any reasonable distances.
