Most Helpful 5-Star Review

5.0 out of 5 stars. Buy, use and WASH them

These blankets are COLD WATER WASHABLE. Johnston of Elgin praises itself for manufacturing woolen goods since 1797. Do you think that they had dry cleaners back then? Or do you think that Scotts were using these blankets for a while and, once dirtied up, they were discarding them? The answers to both questions are: No. They were washing these blankets then, they wash these blankets now. HOW TO WASH THIS BLANKET: (a) use cold water (avoid warm temp. water because warm water could cause fleecing and/or bleeding of colours), (b) either hand wash or machine wash on hand-wash cycle (fast spinning would untangle fringes), (c) use very delicate soap (I use Woolite or Kookaburra Wash), (d) lay it flat to have it dry (no high temp. dryers! I usually just fold a blanket in two and hang it over the ironing boards and leave it there to dry overnight, or take it to a room with a ceiling fan on and leave it to dry there). So, if you (like me) don't like chemicals and having your items mass dry-cleaned with other people's items, simply wash these blankets. This is my second review on "how to" about these blankets. I washed my JofE Shetland and Hebridean throws too, all with the same result: the wash beautifully (we have a cat and hairballs happen, so I wash these blankets). This particular blanket, JofE Lambswool Throw, is my favourite of all; it is very warm and soft (softer than Shetland or Hebridean), the size is perfect to use it as a pled to cover legs while reading/watching TV, etc. It's great to have it in a car for a potential emergency in winter, and these blankets works great as a Christmas/Holiday gifts. I like so many of the colours [...] that it seems there's no end to buying them ... and with Sierra's prices, one cannot go wrong. So, buy, use and feel free to wash them.

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Good quality

Perhaps not the densest wool, but functional.
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars. Not as nice as they used to be

I bought a few of these same throws a few years back. I recently bought one more as a gift. They are the same size, but half as thick and the fringes on the edges are skinny and look like they will not wear well. Disappointed.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. Thinner than expected

I have bought several Johnstons of Elgin lambswool throws over the years, and while this one is pretty and soft, it is also noticeable thinner and lighter than most of the others ones I have. Whether this is just one blanket or whether the quality is declining in general I don't know but knowing the thickness of my other throws I cannot give this a full 5 stars.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Warm Lambswool Throw

This is the third "throw" blanket that I have ordered from Johnston's of Elgin. These are extremely warm and versatile. The wool is very thick weave, almost thick enough for a rug and yet soft and cozy.

The colors are very vibrant. With the horrible winter that we have experienced in the south this year, I have used it daily while watching T. V. or just reclining. I have the brown and orange combination for my den. I also ordered the green, black, and red plaid for my living room. The latest addition is the pink, yellow, and mint.

After almost two years of use, my first one still looks quite new, even after daily use.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Gorgeous Easter Gift !

This blanket is much prettier than picture . Soft and the warmest blanket I have ever purchased while being feather light !

About Johnstons of Elgin

The inherent luxury of pure Scottish cashmere is borne out in every garment that arrives from the legendary mills of Johnstons of Elgin - a centuries-old family firm doing business in the far North of Scotland since 1797. Using the finest cashmere and superfine wools in the world, Johnstons processes its fibers in a rare "vertical mill" system, where all of the dyeing, spinning, weaving and finishing are carefully controlled on site. Johnstons produces a range of cloth, knitwear and home furnishings at this historic plant - products that are probably best known for their irresistible softness to the touch. The secret, Johnstons believes, is in the finishing, a process still enhanced by the super soft, clear water from nearby River Lossie.
