The towel is stitched to the rubber gripping across the mat, so even after watching the towel and grippy rubber part are attached. The grippy part is similar to those grippy pieces you can put inside kitchen drawers. This is not really thick enough to be it's own mat, unless you don't care when traveling and just need something temporary. Washes easily and dries fast when hung dry.

It is almost like a towel with a rubber backing so I put it on top of my regular mat. But it is great to absorb all the sweat and keep my hands and feet from slipping around during sweaty yoga sessions.
