5.0 out of 5 stars. Brand Comparison

I've always worn Chippewas or Wolverine 1000 Mile's in the past, so this was my first pair of Red Wings. I wanted the Iron Ranger, because I needed some black boots and I wanted them with a cap toe. I'll mention that Wolverine 1000 Mile boots are very nice and the leather is actually thicker than on my Red Wings, which runs counter to everything I've read in the past (they also take longer to break in). I really like my Chippewas, but the quality isn't quite on par with either brand (more on that later). The sizing is similar with all 3 brands, but my Wolverines are the largest, while the Chippewas are the smallest (maybe the most inconsistent sizing, also).

My Iron Rangers fit perfect and probably better than my Wolverines and Chippewas. I actually consider this a sign of quality, although I may be reaching some there. For whatever reason, they just feel right, while the other 2 brands seem a little off. That my just be coincidental, though, since these are my first Iron Rangers.

They're also more comfortable. Chippewa uses a synthetic midsole for it's Service boot, while the Iron Ranger and 1000 Mile both use a more comfortable cork midsole (The 1000 Mile also has a leather bottom sole, although I added rubber half soles to mine). The nitrile cork sole on the Iron Ranger is the same as on the Chippewa Service boot, but even though only the latter one is made by Vibram, I actually think the Iron Ranger sole may be softer and more comfortable (the Vibram sole on the Chippewa is quite hard, although the midsole differences may play a role in my opinion). The soles on the Iron Ranger are also a little wider, as the welt sticks out further - which I like, but some may prefer how it's nearly hidden on the sleeker/dressier 1000 Mile. While the Iron Ranger does have a more bulbous toe, I'm not sure the boot is any wider than the other 2 and it may be more narrow than the 1000 Mile.

The leather may also be nicer, depending on what you appreciate. Most of my other boots use Horween leather and it's at least as thick as the leather on my Iron Rangers, despite what I've heard. I also think it's more beautiful, but that's only because my Iron Rangers use black harness, which admittedly isn't one of the more attractive colors. But the leather on my Iron Rangers is supple and it took all of 5 minutes to break in ( I felt some initial discomfort, but it was gone within minutes and that's when they became my most comfortable boots). Amazingly, I've already worn them several times and there isn't any creasing around the ankles/throat, whatsoever, while my other smooth leather boots showed creasing there immediately. There is a slight creasing in the toes, as expected, but it's almost non-existent.

Overall, I love these boots and am now a fan of Red Wing. There's nothing wrong with the other brands, but while the 1000 Mile may actually be nicer on paper, I believe the Iron Ranger is more comfortable due to the actual craftsmanship. It just seems like more time was put into making sure that the Iron Ranger would fit well and be comfortable. I'll continue to wear all 3 brands, but I just feel like the craftsmanship is a little better with the Iron Ranger.

The negative experience of the first purchase in this store, and for the first time in 10 years of online shopping !!! Instead of the legendary Red Wing 8111 size 8D, Danner Rivot 51536 size 12 EE boots were sent to me ... Is that the same thing? I've written about the disparity of the goods sent in support, provided a video of the discrepancy of the ordered goods. Support didn't apologize. So I guess they don't admit this awful mistake. That's why I conclude they couldn't sell the Danner boots and sent them instead Red Wing.I am sorry to leave a negative review, but I see the situation this way. There's no good review about the legendary shoes Red Wing as a gift for my father ... This shop even with their discounts doesn't worth the lost money, time and nerves!

About what I expected - not as flawless as off the shelf at the Red Wing store. Looks still well made and no major imperfections in the leather. Fairly good value at $125 off MSRP for getting the factory seconds.
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars. Hassle to get but worth it

Have been wanting IRs for a while and though I was in luck when I found a size 10. Ordered but the next morning received an email saying it was cancelled for lack of availability. The same thing happened two more times. STP was kind enough to offer a $20 gift card to address my frustration but Rangers were available. Kept monitoring and about a week later several sizes including 10 appeared. Grabbed them and the order stuck this time. The box arrived and the boots were beautiful. I searched for a defect and found a slight pucker on the toe of the right boot. Some may have found it to be sufficient grounds for a return but everything else about them looked first rate and decided to keep them, considering the price and the $20 gift card. I've had them just about a week and the break-in process so far has been way better than expected. I already feel like they're pretty close to broken in and I can comfortably take walks of 1-2 miles. This was a nice surprise after reading a lot of horror stories and also much better than my break-in experience with Chippewa service boots. Now I get to enjoy the long-term benefits. I did size down from my "normal" 10.5 and almost feel like I could have fit a 9.5. But the size 10 is making me happy.
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars. 1 out of 3 pair uneven

Went thru 3 pair before I got the right fit. My fault. Returns all went great. When I got the pair that had the right fit, the part on one of the boots where the lace eyelets are is uneven from the other boot. Not a huge deal, maybe an 1/8 to just a bit more. Doesn't change the fit it just makes the width between each side of the laces a bit different on each boot. Looks like you got a wider foot on one side than the other, doesn't pull as close together only in one section. Other than that they are great. I realize they are seconds, its just that the first 2 pair I couldn't find any issue with at all. I may have traded them out but in my excitement to get them I went ahead and Mink Oiled them. I will be getting more later. Blacksmiths probably

They deserve the reputation they get, and at this price they really are an amazing deal. Mine came with a vibram sole instead of what was listed, but I’m even happier with that so can’t complain!

About Red Wing

With a heritage dating back to 1905, Red Wing Shoes are legendary as an American success story. One Red Wing shoe style was standard GI-issue for WWI soldiers, and after emerging successfully from the Great Depression and the Second World War, the Red Wing brand name became synonymous with reliable, comfortable leather shoes and boots. Norman Rockwell, the artist famous for Americana artwork, even created a series of drawings for Red Wing Shoes. In the 1970s, Red Wing Shoes spread to Canada, Mexico, South America and Europe, offering its popular line of leather work boots and shoes. Red Wing has broadened its scope to offer everything from casual leather lace-up shoes and loafers to rugged work boots to thong sandals. Today, Red Wing runs three production facilities employing hundreds of expert craftsmen, but still makes each pair of oxfords, loafers, work boots and athletic shoes by hand.
