Unfortunately, there are no pit-zips. I used it for the summer in Iowa and had plenty of rainstorms and it worked really well. However, it does not breath well in warmer weather. After the storms, when I would take the jacket off, there would be a layer of moisture on my skin. Generally though, if you are not going to be using it in hot weather for longer than an hour at a time, I think you would be alright. Although, if you are planning on using it for summer hikes, I would look at getting something more breathable.

No, it is like an old-fashioned rain slicker, only much much lighter. I would use it in rain in the summer since it's light, but it's not something you'd wear on a hot day if you had a vented alternative.
