It depends on the volume of shoes you plan to use them with and how easy you want them to be to install. I got size small to use on women's american size 7 hiking boots and I can get them onto the boots when I'm not wearing the boots. But I think they will be difficult to install while the boots are on my feet or if my hands are cold. I have a bigger pair that I use for insulated boots - they may be a large or even XL - and they are so easy to install that I can do it without having to sit down in the snow. If you get them bigger so they are easier to put on, then they are more likely to fall off the boots. I hook them to the shoelaces with a mini caribiner so that if they come off, I don't lose them.
